The sequel to the cult classic shifts the paranormal action to the streets of New York, introduces a new protagonist, features melee-focused combat, and targets a 2026 release.
At today’s The Game Awards 2025, Remedy Entertainment officially unveiled CONTROL Resonant, the highly anticipated sequel to their multi-award-winning 2019 hit. In a surprising twist, the game shifts perspective from Director Jesse Faden to her troubled brother, Dylan Faden, who becomes the playable protagonist.
Set to launch in 2026, the game promises to significantly expand the franchise, moving beyond the brutalist corridors of the Oldest House and into a “warped Manhattan” teetering on the brink of annihilation.
Escape the Oldest House
According to the official description, CONTROL Resonant picks up with Dylan Faden being deployed by his former captors at the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC) during the peak of a supernatural crisis. A mysterious cosmic entity is rewriting reality, twisting New York City into a “geophysical nightmare.”
Players will guide Dylan as he explores expansive zones of the city, battling familiar threats such as the corrupting Hiss and the invasive Mold, along with twisted new enemies. While fighting to save humanity, Dylan is also on a personal quest to reclaim his identity and find his sister, Jesse Faden.
The Aberrant: A New Way to Fight
While the original game focused on the Service Weapon (a shapeshifting gun), CONTROL Resonant introduces a new tool of destruction: The Aberrant. This shapeshifting melee weapon seems to be the core of Dylan’s arsenal.
Remedy describes the combat as fluid and brutal, with the Aberrant morphing on demand. Players can deliver “bone-crunching blows with a two-handed hammer” or switch instantly to the “swift precision of dual-wielded blades.” Combined with elemental abilities and environmental destruction, the gameplay appears to lean heavily into aggressive, close-quarters action.
The game is billed as an Action-Adventure RPG, featuring a deep progression system that lets players shape how Dylan’s abilities manifest and grow.
A “Reality-Warping Playground”
Mikael Kasurinen, Creative Director of CONTROL Resonant, emphasized the sequel’s increased scale.
“We’re pushing the scale beyond anything we’ve done before, elevating combat, exploration, and storytelling into a bigger, more memorable experience,” Kasurinen said in a press release. “It’s ambitious, a little wild, and we can’t wait for players to get lost in it.”
He also noted that the game is designed to be accessible to newcomers: “You don’t have to know the first game to jump into the sequel; we’ve made this one easy to pick up and hard to put down.”
Release and Partnership
CONTROL Resonant is being self-published by Remedy Entertainment, with Annapurna Pictures co-financing and co-producing the title.
The game is scheduled for release in 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store), and Mac.
