After a successful debut at TwitchCon, Firefox’s card game about data privacy and sending billionaires to space is now free to play online.
Last month at TwitchCon, Firefox celebrated its 21st birthday with a unique activation: Data War, a chaotic card game that satirizes the hidden business of personal data. Today, Firefox has announced that the game is now available digitally, allowing anyone to play for free directly in their browser.
In Data War, players compete to protect their data (currency) and outsmart rival billionaires. The ultimate goal? Launch an over-the-top billionaire avatar on a one-way trip to space.
Chaotic Fun with a Message
Designed in partnership with Mondo Robot and incorporating feedback from Firefox engineers (and their teenage kids), the game blends the mechanics of classic War with the chaotic energy of Exploding Kittens. It features cards like “Data Grab,” “Firewalls,” and “Billionaire Moves,” all designed to expose how Big Tech profits from user data.
“If you laugh at something, you have power over it,” said Dave Rowley, Executive Creative Director at Mondo Robot. “We took the approach of applying absurdity as a cathartic device… balancing the realities of billionaires profiting off your data with a sort of reductive sarcasm.”
How to Play
The digital version streamlines the rules for quick, browser-based sessions. Players can jump in solo or with friends to stack their decks and trigger events like the “Data Grab” minigame.
- Win Condition: Collect 3 Launch Stacks + 1 Billionaire to buy a “One Way Ticket to Space.”
- Gameplay: High value wins. Ties lead to a “Data War.” Special cards like Trackers boost points, while Blockers sabotage opponents.
You can play the digital version now at billionaireblastoff.firefox.com/datawar. For those who prefer a tabletop experience, a printable version of the physical deck is still available for download.
