Capcom has moved up the release date for Onimusha: Way of the Sword — the long-awaited return of the iconic swordplay action franchise is now launching on September 4, 2026 across PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store. The date was previously slated for later in the year, and the advance is weeks sooner than players were expecting. A demo is already available on all platforms right now.
This is the first new Onimusha game in 20 years — a franchise that defined action gaming on PlayStation 2 and sold tens of millions of copies across its original run. Way of the Sword follows Miyamoto Musashi, armed with a mystical Oni Gauntlet, as he battles demons invading Edo-period Kyoto. History and supernatural horror collide in classic Onimusha fashion.
About the Game
The series’ signature mechanics return — the Issen counter strike and Soul Absorption system — updated for modern combat and combined with new swordplay that pushes the action further.
A dark fantasy reimagining of historical Japan. Demons are invading Kyoto during the Edo period, and Miyamoto Musashi is the one standing between them and the city.
Musashi wields a mystical Oni Gauntlet alongside his sword — the supernatural power source that makes him more than just a legendary swordsman.
Supernatural enemies invading Kyoto form the core combat encounters, with boss fights designed around the series’ precision-based, high-skill swordplay identity.
