Developer Double Eleven has renamed their pitch-black FPS Blindfire to Blindfire: Lights Out, made it completely free to download and play across all platforms, and pledged to keep the servers running for years — not because it was a commercial hit, but because they believe it deserves to exist.
Released in Early Access in October 2024 with a genuinely unique premise — an online shooter where the lights are off, and you navigate by sound and gadgets rather than sight — Blindfire never found the audience it deserved. Double Eleven hadn’t actively worked on the game for about a year before today’s surprise final update.
So why come back?
“We are doing this because we believe games are art and they deserve to be preserved,” the studio wrote on Steam. “We refuse to bury what we built just because things didn’t go perfectly. We are keeping it alive because we are proud of it.”
The final update isn’t just a server switch — it’s a real send-off. Two new weapons, new achievements, and fresh unlockable skins have been added. Most meaningfully, the update introduces a new Audio Aim Assist accessibility feature developed in response to feedback from blind and partially sighted players who told the team that Blindfire was one of the first shooters they could truly compete in. Sound cues now help players orient themselves and track targets. “To us, it feels like a fitting final addition to a game about fighting in the dark,” said Double Eleven.
There are no ads, no marketing campaigns, no monetization push. The studio described it plainly: “This is just a gift to those who want to see what we created.”
In an industry that has shuttered ambitious online titles — sometimes within weeks of launch — Double Eleven’s decision to preserve Blindfire rather than quietly pull the plug is genuinely noteworthy.
