Echoes of the Unread
Game: Echoes of the Unread
Developer: Clever Cat Games
Publishers: Mega Cat Studios & 8-Bit Legit
Status: Free Demo Live on Steam — Full Release TBA 2026
The free Steam demo for Echoes of the Unread is now live — and it’s a genuine reason to pay attention to one of the more charming indie musical adventures coming later this year. Developed by Clever Cat Games’ Matt Tuttle and co-published by Mega Cat Studios and 8-Bit Legit, Echoes of the Unread originally launched as a physical NES cartridge following a successful Kickstarter. The Steam version is an enhanced, widescreen-adapted release that Tuttle himself describes as feeling almost like a remastered version of the NES original — with new features that the hardware constraints of the original cartridge didn’t permit.
The game casts you as Rhapsody, a young girl who falls asleep in an enchanted library and wakes to find the books have burst into life — and her singing voice now has literal power over the world around her. The demo includes the library itself and the game’s first full zone: a Wild West frontier town where Rhapsody must explore, befriend its characters, and collect lost pages to find her way home.
What’s New in the Steam Version
Matt Tuttle was direct about the changes the Steam platform allowed the team to make — features that simply weren’t possible within NES hardware limitations:
“The Steam demo of Echoes of the Unread adds features I wanted to put in the NES game but wasn’t able to due to console limitations. It almost feels like a remastered version. There’s an added inventory to help track your progress. Controller vibration to increase the immersion when exploring the library. Backgrounds to accommodate widescreen monitors. And the dialogue is easier to read with a new font that includes lowercase and has proper line spacing.”
