We sat down with the developer of Revolutron in the lobby of the InterContinental Hotel for an exclusive look at the adventurous Delivery Cat making waves at GDC.
The beauty of the Game Developers Conference (GDC) isn’t just found on the massive, flashing show floor of the Moscone Center. Some of the most exciting discoveries happen in the quiet corners of hotel lobbies, sitting across a coffee table from a passionate indie developer with a laptop and an Xbox controller.
On Wednesday, March 11th, our team experienced exactly that. We managed to secure a sit-down meeting with the solo developer behind Revolutron to check out an extended demo of their upcoming action-adventure game, The Secret of Crystal Mountain.
If you are a fan of early-era 3D Legend of Zelda games and have a soft spot for feline protagonists, this is a title you need to put on your radar immediately.
The Purr-fect Protagonist
In The Secret of Crystal Mountain, you play as a daring Delivery Cat who finds themselves stranded on a magical, mysterious island. Crystal Mountain Isle was once the world’s leading exporter of magic crystals, supplying witches and wizards across the globe. Then, one day, the exports inexplicably stopped, and the island has been shrouded in mystery ever since.
From the moment the demo started, the Zelda inspiration was wonderfully apparent. The world features a vibrant, stylized 3D aesthetic that immediately evokes The Wind Waker or Ocarina of Time. But instead of a tunic-clad Hylian, you are a nimble cat running, swimming, and climbing your way through the vibrant landscapes.
A World Built as a Puzzle Box
During our play session, the developer emphasized that the entire island is designed as a massive, interconnected puzzle box.
The puzzles we encountered in the demo struck a great balance. They weren’t mind-meltingly difficult, but they required enough interaction with the environment to make the world feel tactile and rewarding. As you explore, you uncover magical items that serve dual purposes: acting as keys to solve localized puzzles and providing new traversal mechanics to reach previously inaccessible areas of the island. It is the classic “Metroidvania” progression loop executed with immense charm.
Feline Combat
Of course, the island isn’t entirely peaceful. While trying to solve one of the environmental puzzles, I was ambushed by a group of surprisingly aggressive enemies.
I will admit, they kicked my butt for a little bit. The combat requires you to be mindful of your spacing and timing, rather than just mashing the attack button. But with a little luck (and, let’s be honest, my innate gaming awesomeness), I was able to dispatch the foes and secure the required item to progress.
The controller integration was flawless. Playing on an Xbox controller felt native and responsive, which is exactly what a platforming adventure game needs to succeed.
Looking Ahead to 2026
While our time with the game was limited to a hotel lobby demo, it left a massive impression. The Secret of Crystal Mountain has all the makings of a cozy, captivating indie hit. The world looks gorgeous, the progression mechanics are tried and true, and the mystery surrounding the island’s sudden silence is a great narrative hook.
The game is currently listed as “Coming Soon” on Steam. We really hope to see more of this game in the near future, ideally through a longer public demo or playtest, before a planned launch later in 2026.
