Old Snake Returns: Metal Gear Solid 4 Escapes PS3 Exclusivity

METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 2

METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 2

The wait is over. After 18 years of exclusivity, Metal Gear Solid 4 is coming to modern consoles and PC. Plus: Peace Walker, Ghost Babel, and confirmation for the Nintendo Switch 2.

For nearly two decades, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots has been the white whale of video game preservation. Trapped on the PlayStation 3 due to the Cell Processor’s complex architecture, fans believed it might never see a native port to other hardware. Today, Konami proved them wrong.

During Sony Interactive’s State of Play showcase, Konami officially unveiled Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2. The collection is set to launch on August 27, 2026.

In a move that cements the collection’s future-proof status, Konami confirmed the title will release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, the current Nintendo Switch, and explicitly the Nintendo Switch 2.

The End of an Era (and an Exclusivity)

The headline of this collection is undeniably Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Originally released in 2008, the game served as the grand finale for Solid Snake (now rapidly aging into “Old Snake”). For 18 years, it has remained one of the few AAA blockbusters completely inaccessible on modern hardware.

Its inclusion in Vol. 2 means that PC and Xbox players will finally be able to experience the conclusion of the Patriots’ saga, complete with its cinematic cutscenes, OctoCamo mechanics, and the legendary microwave hallway sequence.

Peace Walker and a Cult Classic Return

But Old Snake isn’t arriving alone. The collection also features Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. Based on the “HD Collection” version rather than the raw PSP original, this title bridges the gap between Snake Eater and The Phantom Pain. Crucially, Konami has confirmed that the online co-op is intact and supports up to six players. This allows squads to team up for boss battles and base building just as they did in 2010.

Perhaps the most surprising addition is Metal Gear: Ghost Babel (released simply as Metal Gear Solid on Game Boy Color in Western regions). Often cited as one of the best 2D stealth games ever made, this non-canon spin-off is a cult favorite that has been difficult to play legally for years. Its inclusion shows Konami is digging deep into the archives.

The Complete Package

Konami continues the trend established in Vol. 1 by including supplementary historical materials.

Pre-Order Bonuses and Standalone Options

Pre-orders kicked off today for both physical and digital versions. Early adopters will receive a tongue-in-cheek bonus fitting for the series:

Additionally, Konami confirmed that players with save data from Master Collection Vol. 1 on their system will unlock additional in-game bonus items as a reward for franchise loyalty.

For those who want only MGS4 or Peace Walker, Konami confirmed these titles will be available for standalone digital purchase, separate from the full bundle.

The Switch 2 Confirmation

While the games are the star, the platform list provided a juicy nugget of industry news. By officially listing the Nintendo Switch 2 as a launch platform for August 27, Konami has joined the growing list of publishers openly discussing Nintendo’s successor console. It suggests that the new hardware will be backward compatible or launch with a dedicated version of this collection.

A Snake Eater Bundle

To celebrate the announcement, Konami also revealed a new bundle on Steam. Players can now purchase Master Collection Vol. 1 bundled with the upcoming remake, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, offering an affordable entry point for newcomers to catch up on the lore before the remake drops.
