The next chapter in The Dark Pictures Anthology brings back Movie Night Mode, introduces a visual branching story tree, and forces friends to decide who lives and who dies aboard the Cassiopeia.
Supermassive Games has built an empire on making players yell at their friends on the couch. Whether you accidentally got a camp counselor killed in The Quarry or made a disastrous narrative choice in Until Dawn, the studio knows exactly how to weaponize social tension.
During today’s Future Games Show presentation, Supermassive officially confirmed that their upcoming sci-fi survival horror adventure, Directive 8020, will continue that proud tradition. The studio debuted a brand-new live-action trailer specifically focused on the return of the fan-favorite local multiplayer feature: Movie Night Mode.
Slated to launch on May 12, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, Directive 8020 is taking the signature interactive horror formula to deep space. But as the new trailer explicitly warns: Don’t Play Alone, and trust no one – not even your friends!
Survive Together in Movie Night Mode
While Directive 8020 offers a gripping single-player experience, the live-action trailer highlighted the sheer chaos of playing the game exactly as Supermassive intended: crammed onto a couch with four other people.
Movie Night Mode allows up to five players to play through the entire story together in local couch co-op. Each player assigns themselves control of a specific crew member aboard the doomed deep-space vessel, the Cassiopeia. As the cinematic narrative unfolds, players simply pass a single controller back and forth when it is their character’s turn to act.
The trailer intercuts live-action footage of a group of friends frantically screaming at each other with intense in-game moments of split-second quick-time events (QTEs), brutal narrative decisions, and terrifying alien mimics. Because the alien infiltrators in Directive 8020 can take the shape of the crew, passing the controller to a friend takes on a whole new layer of paranoia.

Second Chances: The ‘Turning Points’ System
Perhaps the most significant mechanical addition announced today is the Turning Points feature.
For the first time in the history of The Dark Pictures Anthology, Directive 8020 will feature a visual branching story tree. This allows players to actively map their major choices and outcomes as the story progresses, providing a clear view of exactly how their decisions have shaped the narrative.
More importantly, this system gives players the unprecedented ability to revisit pivotal decisions. If a critical moment results in a gruesome death, a fractured alliance, or a failed QTE, players can return to a key “Turning Point” on the timeline to explore an alternative path.
In group sessions, this adds a brilliant new layer of social dynamics. If a player accidentally kills their friend’s favorite character, the group can debate whether to accept the grim consequence or use a Turning Point to rewind time and attempt a rescue.
However, for purists who want the true, high-stakes Supermassive experience, the game will feature a dedicated Survival Mode. In this mode, the Turning Points feature is disabled, and every single consequence is locked in permanently. If you die, you die.
Launch Details and Online Multiplayer
Directive 8020 will launch on May 12, 2026, fully supporting single-player and the 5-player offline Movie Night Mode right out of the gate.
For groups who cannot manage to get everyone onto the same physical couch, Supermassive also confirmed that full five-player online multiplayer will be arriving in a free post-launch update. This update will mirror the local co-op experience, allowing friends to share the terror and the decision-making over voice chat.
