Valve has officially announced that the new Steam Controller launches on May 4th, 2026, at 10 a.m. Pacific — and it looks like a serious piece of kit.
Priced at $99 USD, the controller is built to work across the full Steam ecosystem: PC, laptop, Steam Deck, and any device running Steam or Steam Link on Windows, Mac, or Linux. It’s also designed with the upcoming Steam Machine and Steam Frame in mind.
What’s Inside
The headline hardware feature is a set of next-generation magnetic thumbsticks that use TMR (Tunnel Magnetoresistance) technology, offering improved precision and longevity over traditional analog sticks. Beyond that, the controller packs full-sized controls, dual trackpads, grip buttons, and a gyro system that activates via grip — dubbed Grip Sense.
Battery life is rated at 35+ hours per charge, which should comfortably cover even the longest gaming sessions.
The Puck
Arguably the most interesting accessory detail: the Steam Controller ships with a magnetic puck that doubles as both a wireless transmitter for a fast, low-latency connection and a charging station. The controller clicks right onto it magnetically — a clean, no-fuss solution for keeping it topped up between sessions.
