Among the triple-A announcements and hardware reveals at TwitchCon San Diego 2025, one of the most unexpected—and addictive—hits came from an unlikely source: Firefox and their physical card game, Billionaire Blast Off (also known as Data War).
TheBigBois team got hands-on with the game at the Firefox Booth (#2805) on Saturday, where we quickly realized this satirical card game is far more than just a clever marketing stunt. It’s a genuine blast, and it carried the energy of the event right back to our hotel and out to the Block Party.
Launching Billionaires and Loving the Chaos
The concept of the overall campaign is simple: the internet should be accessible to everyone, not just the wealthy, and Firefox—a non-profit-backed, private browser—is the alternative. The metaphor? Launch the billionaires into space to take back control of your data.
The main product of this campaign is Data War: The Card Game. We sat down with one of the creators at the booth on Saturday morning and were taught how to play the three-way game. Instantly, the fun, lighthearted chaos reminded us of card game classics like War and Exploding Kittens. The goal is to avoid launching your own billionaires while making sure your opponents’ avatars are the ones that get blasted into orbit. It’s fast, mean, and utterly hilarious.
The enjoyment didn’t stop on the Expo floor. We found ourselves playing it again that evening at the hotel. Later, during the TwitchCon Block Party in the San Diego Gaslamp area, we were thrilled to see tables full of people eating, drinking, and obsessively playing the card game—we were even the only group who didn’t need to ask questions about the rules! It was clear that Firefox had struck gold with a truly engaging, shareable physical game.

AR Holobox Fun and the Future of Data War
During our time at the Firefox booth, we also got to experience the AR Holobox setup. This clever interactive feature allowed us to generate our own personalized, funny-looking Billionaire avatars and watch them dance around in comical fashion. This tie-in perfectly highlighted the satirical and community-focused nature of the campaign.
The original campaign centered on the promise of a digital game called Data War, which would allow players to create their billionaire avatar and launch them into space. While the focus at TwitchCon was the brilliant physical card game, we were very excited to hear that the digital version is still planned for a late 2025 release on the Firefox browser.
For now, the physical card game is holding us over, proving that a great game concept can transcend its marketing purpose. With the Billionaires now safely off-planet and out of your personal data, as Firefox’s recap states, we’re ready to continue the Data War and cannot wait for the full digital version to drop.
