Zombie fans, get your VR gear ready—World War Z VR is officially shuffling onto Meta Quest and SteamVR this August 12. Developed and published by Saber Interactive, this new single-player FPS entry in the best-selling World War Z franchise promises a whole new level of undead immersion. And if the original title’s scale was any indication, this one might be just what VR needs to bring the apocalypse home—literally.
Back From the Dead (In VR This Time)
Our team of zombie game addicts couldn’t be happier with this announcement. The original World War Z game, released in 2020, delivered on the promise of chaotic, cinematic undead action with massive swarms of zombies. Few games have come close to recreating that “wave of death” feel outside of Days Gone. Now, Saber aims to recreate that same intensity—only this time, in first-person VR.
We’re talking up to 200 zombies on screen at once, swarming you in tight corridors, across rooftops, and through overrun streets. That kind of horde density in VR is a technical feat, and if they pull it off right, it could be a game-changer for the genre.
What to Expect at Launch
Players will fight through three cities—New York, Tokyo, and Marseille—each transformed into an undead warzone. You’ll choose from seven different characters and build your own zombie-slaying loadout using perks and a variety of weapons. AI squadmates will join you on missions, helping even the odds as you navigate some of the most crowded and intense zombie encounters VR has ever attempted.
World War Z VR isn’t just a port of the old game—it’s a completely reimagined experience. Built from the ground up for VR, it includes:
- Full first-person perspective
- VR-optimized combat and movement
- Dynamic zombie AI and swarm behavior
- Mission-based progression and unlocks
- Three difficulty settings to test your nerve and skill
Pre-Orders & Bonuses
Starting today, you can pre-order the game for $19.99 on the Meta Store and SteamVR. As a bonus, pre-orders include the Golden Skin Pack—a flashy bundle of four gold-plated weapons that you can flex while you fight for your life.
Steam players can also snag a bundle with both World War Z VR and the original World War Z for 20% off, which is a solid deal if you’ve never played the first.

Our Thoughts So Far
We haven’t played it yet—but we’re planning to go hands-on with the Valve Index and Meta Quest 3 to see how well this stacks up. If Saber can deliver the same fluid horde mechanics that made the original game such a blast, VR players are in for something special.
We’re especially curious to see how the pacing translates. Traditional zombie shooters work because you have space and time to plan—but with a headset strapped to your face and 200 shrieking undead barreling at you, you’ll need nerves of steel (and fast reloads).
