Worth registering even if you can’t play this week: Wolcen confirm that anyone who joins a playtest keeps access to all future regular Closed Alpha builds.
💀 Closed Alpha 6 adds the features players have been asking for most. A new Party System, the Double Axe summoner weapon, Soulbound Items that survive your death, and a new Asgard map.
⚖️ Soulbound Items Change Who This Game Is For
The most interesting addition in Closed Alpha 6 is the one that sounds smallest: Soulbound Items — gear that won’t be lost when you die.
Extraction games live on a single brutal rule: bring something in, lose it if you don’t get out. That tension is the entire appeal for its fans, and precisely why so many players bounce off the genre after one bad run.
Letting some items survive death is a deliberate softening of that rule. It means a run can go catastrophically wrong without wiping out everything you’d built toward — keeping the stakes while removing the part that makes people quit.
Pair that with the new Party System, which changes the risk calculus again — heading into the underworld with friends is a very different proposition to going alone — and Closed Alpha 6 looks like a build aimed at widening the game’s audience, not just testing it.
Descend. Reap. Escape if you can.
Guided by Death himself through realms drawn from world mythology — and now, Asgard.
Wolcen Studio has opened Closed Alpha 6 for Gods, Death & Reapers, its isometric dark fantasy extraction RPG. The playtest runs from now until September 28 and is open to players across North America, Europe, South America, Southeast Asia and East Asia.
The studio describes this build as introducing some of the community’s most-requested features — continuing a development process it has deliberately kept player-facing.
What’s New in Closed Alpha 6
👥 Party System
Descend into Death’s domain alongside others rather than going it alone.
🪓 Double Axe
A new summoner weapon joining the arsenal.
🔗 Soulbound Items
Gear that stays with you even when a run ends badly.
⚡ Asgard
A brand-new map, and a new corner of mythology to raid.
Wolcen have published a full rundown on their blog for anyone who wants the complete list of changes.
What Is an “ExtrAction RPG”?
⚔️ PvP Extraction Meets ARPG Combat
Wolcen are coining their own sub-genre label here, and the description is clear enough: an isometric dark fantasy game that blends high-stakes PvP extraction with traditional PvE encounters, fought in ARPG-style real-time combat.
You play a Reaper, guided by Death through realms inspired by mythologies from around the world. Each descent means taking on objectives, fighting dangerous enemies and rival Reapers, and trying to escape with whatever loot you’ve gathered.
Between runs, the Sanctuary is where you craft gear and manage resources before heading back down. You can customise your Reaper, join factions that offer their own challenges, and build a playstyle out of weapon abilities and ultimate skills through the game’s skill customisation.
It’s a genuinely interesting combination — the loot-and-build satisfaction of an ARPG, with the tension of knowing another player might be waiting between you and the exit.
A Community-Led Development Process
🗣️ Six Closed Alphas and Counting
This is the sixth closed alpha, and Wolcen frame each one as a response to player feedback. Closed Alpha 6 in particular is built around features the community asked for most — the Party System and Soulbound Items are exactly the kind of requests that come from people who’ve spent real time with a build.
The permanent access perk reinforces that: join one playtest and you’re in for all future regular Closed Alpha builds. It’s a sensible way to grow a testing community rather than reshuffling it every few months.
Gods, Death & Reapers is Wolcen Studio’s follow-up to Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem, their previous action RPG — so the studio is working in adjacent territory with a very different structure this time.
