Saber Interactive has released the “Waves of Lead” update for World War Z, its co-op zombie shooter. It’s free for all players on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam and the Epic Games Store, and arrives alongside a new premium cosmetic, the Valhalla Raider Weapon Skin Pack.
Six New Heavy Weapon Perks
| Perk & Weapon | What It Does | The Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Last Exhaust SchreiTech Forest Warrior chainsaw | When the chainsaw runs out of fuel, you get three seconds of camouflage. | None stated |
| Pillbox MAG5 machine gun | You can’t be grabbed while aiming. | None stated |
| Cluster Bombs Hailstorm MGL | Grenades become cluster bombs that scatter small charges, detonating one second after the main blast. | Blast radius −50% |
| Dragon Breath Shells Taiga-12 heavy assault shotgun | Fires incendiary rounds. | Ammo capacity −30% |
| Two-layer Bullet BF25 payload rifle | Bullets pierce the first zombie, then explode on the next target. | Ammo capacity −30% |
| White Phosphorus MRL202 Commando rocket launcher | Sets every enemy in a large area on fire — without leaving a burning puddle behind. | None stated |
Five New Mutators
Equipment crates may be booby-trapped. Available as a permanent mutator.
Everyone — survivors and zombies — has 1 HP. Unlimited knockdowns, and you get back on your feet twice as fast.
Zombies take extra damage from leg shots and less everywhere else.
Explosions from devices and heavy weapons cause bleeding.
You slowly lose ammo while you’re grabbed.
All-In is the one that’s likely to cause the most chaos: when every survivor and every zombie dies in a single hit, but nobody is ever out for long, World War Z turns into something much closer to a frantic arcade game.
Extinction Comes to The Walking Dead
New Weapons and Cosmetics
Waves of Lead also adds two new weapons — the double-barrelled Bullpup Shotgun and the Gas Pipe Wrench melee weapon — plus three unlockable custom frames.
Separately, the paid Valhalla Raider Weapon Skin Pack ($4.99) adds runic steel looks for the Geist 17 machine pistol, ARK-103 assault rifle, BSG-12 bullpup shotgun, Paladin LMG and Taiga-12 heavy assault shotgun. It’s purely cosmetic — all the gameplay content in the update is free.
Still Going Strong
Built on Saber’s Swarm Engine, World War Z throws huge hordes on screen at once across New York, Moscow, Jerusalem, Tokyo, Marseille, Rome/Vatican City and the Kamchatka peninsula, plus DLC episodes in Las Vegas, Arizona and the world of AMC’s The Walking Dead. You can play solo with AI squadmates or with up to four players, with full crossplay between PC and consoles.
Saber’s catalogue has grown a lot since World War Z launched — from Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 to Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival, which we covered recently — so it’s good to see one of its older co-op favourites still getting meaningful free updates.
