Boutique publisher SNEG, in collaboration with Wizards of the Coast, is restoring Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor, the turn-based Forgotten Realms party RPG originally developed by Stormfront Studios and released by Ubisoft in 2001. For years it’s been a challenge to get running on modern systems. This re-release fixes that, adds a long list of modern upgrades, and still lets purists play it the way it was.
Build Your Band of Heroes
Create up to four heroes yourself, then recruit two more companions along the way.
Different species, classes and spells, with characters reaching level 16 and spells up to 8th level. Steam lists over 90 spells.
Play in the genuine turn-based style, or switch on the optional turn timer for faster, higher-pressure fights.
Tactical positioning, spellcraft and steel in classic dungeon crawling through the ruins of Myth Drannor.
SNEG says the adventure offers over 100 hours of gameplay, which is plenty of time to get attached to the party you rolled on night one.
What’s New in the Restoration
A Second Chance for a Lost Classic
The Pool of Radiance name goes all the way back to SSI’s 1988 original, one of the most storied legacies in CRPG history, and Ruins of Myth Drannor returns to it. Its 2001 launch was rough, though: the game was widely criticised for bugs at the time. That makes the bug-fixing and modern-systems work here more than a nice extra. For a lot of RPG fans, this will be the first time they’ve played it, and the first time it’s been sold digitally at all.
