π Snail Games USA have revealed 9 Yin Sutra: Wuxia at Gamescom β an open-world martial arts RPG set across ancient China, built on skill-based combat, deep progression, and a world populated by over a thousand individually-motivated NPCs.
βοΈ It’s a Jianghu Game, and That Word Matters
Snail describe 9 Yin Sutra as putting you into “a new yet familiar jianghu” β and using that term rather than just saying “ancient China” tells you what kind of game this is aiming to be.
Jianghu is the world within the world in wuxia fiction: the itinerant community of martial artists, sects, wanderers, outlaws and masters who operate by their own codes largely outside imperial authority. It’s less a place than a social order β one with its own hierarchies, rivalries and obligations.
For an open-world RPG, that’s a genuinely useful framework. It gives you factions with reasons to exist, a logic for why a wanderer can meaningfully change things, and a built-in explanation for why everyone you meet has an agenda.
A thousand people with their own plans, and one road through all of them
From the tranquil waterways of Jiangnan to frontier deserts, the bustling cities of the Central Plains, and the rugged mountains of the southwest.
9 Yin Sutra: Wuxia is an open-world martial arts RPG drawing on ancient Chinese legend, revealed by Snail Games USA during Gamescom. It combines skill-based combat with deep character progression and, per Snail, the freedom to carve an entirely personal path through a world shaped by your choices.
The pitch is a living martial-arts world β remote wilderness, sprawling cities, towering mountain ranges and hidden strongholds, all under dynamic weather, each region carrying its own secrets.
Feint, Overt, Block
π₯ A Combat Triangle Built on Intent, Not Attack Type
Snail describe combat as running on an evolved Feint, Overt and Block system that rewards timing, precision and strategic proficiency.
What’s interesting is the axis they’ve chosen. Most action games build their triangle around attack type β light, heavy, dodge. Feint versus Overt is a different question entirely: it’s about whether you’re committing or deceiving, with Block sitting as the response to one of them.
That shifts the read from “what is my opponent doing” to “what is my opponent trying to make me think they’re doing,” which is a much more interesting problem β and a very wuxia one, given how much of the genre’s duelling is psychological.
π Feint
The deception. Sell something you aren’t committing to and punish the response.
π₯ Overt
The commitment. Real intent, real damage, and real consequences if it’s read.
π‘οΈ Block
The answer β provided you’ve correctly worked out which of the other two you’re facing.
On top of that sits the progression: uncovering forgotten techniques from diverse martial arts schools and combining them into a fighting style of your own on the road to Grandmastery. Sect-based technique acquisition is bedrock wuxia, and it fits an open world neatly β every school you find is both a location and a build option.
A Thousand NPCs With Their Own Lives
π₯ The Most Ambitious Claim in the Announcement
Snail promise thousands of unique NPCs, each with their own goals, routines, relationships and stories, in a world where every encounter has the potential to influence your legend.
That’s the headline number, and it’s the one worth watching. Populating an open world with individually-motivated characters who actually maintain schedules and relationships is one of the hardest things in the genre β and one of the most frequently promised.
If it lands, it’s the thing that makes a jianghu feel like a living social order rather than a map with quest markers. We’d want to see it running before drawing conclusions, but it’s clearly where Snail are placing their bet.
Four Regions, One Continent
π Jiangnan
Tranquil waterways south of the Yangtze β the softest, most classically picturesque corner of the map.
ποΈ The Frontier Deserts
Vast, exposed and remote, at the edges of settled territory.
π― The Central Plains
Bustling cities and the political heart of the setting.
β°οΈ The Southwestern Mountains
Rugged high country β traditionally where the reclusive sects and hidden schools live.
Each region carries hidden secrets and dynamic weather, and the geographic spread is doing real work thematically. Wuxia stories move constantly, and a world that runs from river towns to desert frontier to mountain monastery gives a wandering hero somewhere to actually wander.
You Don’t Have to Be a Fighter
π² Five Paths Through the Same World
This is the detail that separates it from a straightforward action RPG. Snail list the paths available as: wandering hero, merchant, craftsman, faction leader, or martial arts master.
π‘οΈ Wandering Hero
π° Merchant
π¨ Craftsman
π³οΈ Faction Leader
π₯ Grandmaster
A martial arts game where becoming a merchant is a legitimate ending is an unusual proposition β and, again, a very jianghu one. The genre has always been as interested in obligation, reputation and who owes what to whom as it is in the fighting.
β What We Don’t Know Yet
This is a reveal rather than a dated announcement, and a few significant details are outstanding: there’s no release window, no pricing, and no confirmed platforms beyond PC. The Steam page is live for wishlisting, and that’s currently the extent of it.

Who’s Making It
π Snail Games USA
A global developer and publisher working across a broad range of genres and platforms, with a stated focus on technological innovation and community engagement.
They’ve appeared in our coverage twice recently β as publishers of the four-player co-op zombie defence game Dead Party, and behind the airship survival RPG Echoes of Elysium, which just received its Tempest weather update.
The name itself is worth a note. The Nine Yin Manual is one of the most famous fictional martial arts texts in wuxia literature β a legendary treatise that turns up repeatedly in classic Chinese martial arts fiction as the ultimate prize. Naming your game after it is a clear statement about which tradition you’re writing in.
9 Yin Sutra: Wuxia is available to wishlist on Steam now.
