Game: Alien Deathstorm
Developer: Rebellion (Oxford, UK)
Publisher: Rebellion
Genre: Action-Horror First-Person Shooter
Release: Spring 2027
Platforms: Xbox Series X|S · PC · PS5
Game Pass: Day one
Protagonist: An isolated Engineer
☄️ Rebellion have dated Alien Deathstorm for Spring 2027 and released a new gameplay trailer at Gamescom, where the action-horror shooter is playable for the first time. It arrives day one on Game Pass.
🌪️ The Storm Is the Second Monster
This is what separates Alien Deathstorm from the rest of the “colony overrun by aliens” shelf. You aren’t just fighting the swarm — you’re fighting the weather, and the weather is winning.
Rebellion describe a planetary-scale mega-storm that has already wreaked unprecedented damage on the colony and remains “an ever-present and escalating danger.” It isn’t a backdrop or a set-piece; it’s a second antagonist running on its own clock, getting worse whether or not you’re currently being chased.
Most survival horror gives you one thing to be afraid of and a safe place to catch your breath. A storm that’s actively deteriorating removes the second half of that.
It was supposed to be a rescue mission
You knew it was going to be bad. It’s much worse than you expected, and it’s going downhill fast.
Alien Deathstorm drops you into a devastated off-world colony that has been flattened by a cataclysmic storm and then overrun by predatory aliens. Your job was to find out what happened and get people out. That plan does not survive contact with the situation.
It’s a first-person action-horror game from Rebellion — the Oxford studio behind Sniper Elite and Atomfall — arriving Spring 2027.
You’re an Engineer, Not a Marine
🔧 A Specific Choice of Protagonist
Rebellion are precise about who you’re playing: an isolated Engineer, dropped into a decimated human colony and facing insurmountable odds.
That’s a meaningful decision in a genre that overwhelmingly casts you as a soldier. An engineer’s competence is in systems — knowing how a reactor works, what’s failing and what can be improvised — rather than in combat training. It frames every encounter as something you survived rather than something you were equipped for.
It also explains the mission structure. The Reactor level isn’t a shooting gallery with a door at the end; it’s a job that happens to have aliens in it.
The Reactor Mission
☢️ Three Problems at Once
The new trailer and the Gamescom demo both centre on the Reactor mission, and it’s a neat demonstration of the game’s whole proposition. The Engineer has to:
• Survive the horrific conditions of the mega-storm
• Hold off a relentless alien onslaught
• Fight their way inside a malfunctioning fission reactor to retrieve the Fission Initiator
A failing reactor, a planetary storm and an endless swarm, stacked on top of each other. As Rebellion’s own announcement puts it: no big deal.
Choosing that specific mission as the first playable slice is a confident pick. It’s the level where all three of the game’s pressures are running simultaneously, which is a harder thing to demo than a corridor with monsters in it.
🎪 Playable at Gamescom — First Public Hands-On
Alien Deathstorm is playable for the first time ever at Gamescom, with the Reactor mission as the demo. Rebellion haven’t specified a hall or booth in the announcement, so anyone at the show will want to check the official Gamescom exhibitor listings or Rebellion’s channels for the location.
Game Pass on Day One
🟩 Xbox Series X|S
Day one on Game Pass.
🖥️ Xbox on PC
Also covered by the Game Pass day-one release.
☁️ Xbox Cloud
Streaming from launch.
💨 Steam & PS5
Available separately on PC via Steam and on PlayStation 5.
Full Microsoft ecosystem coverage plus Steam and PlayStation is about as broad as a launch gets. The Game Pass inclusion in particular matters for an original horror IP — it removes the risk from trying something you don’t yet have opinions about.
ℹ️ On the Name
Worth clarifying, since the title invites the question: Rebellion’s announcement makes no reference to the Alien film franchise, and no licensor is credited anywhere in the release. The aliens here are described only in general terms — predatory, swarming, endless.
On the available information this reads as Rebellion’s own IP rather than a licensed tie-in. We’d expect any official franchise connection to be the headline rather than left unmentioned.

Who’s Making It
🇬🇧 Rebellion
Founded in 1992 and based in Oxford, Rebellion describe themselves as the UK’s largest independent creative games studio. Their Sniper Elite series has passed 20 million players, and their recent original IP Atomfall — an action survival game set in Britain — has been played by over 3.5 million. The Zombie Army series is also theirs.
Beyond games, Rebellion own and publish 2000 AD, hold the world’s largest archive of English-language comics, and have acquired a $100m film studio.
Atomfall is the relevant precedent here. It was a brand-new IP built on survival tension in an unusual setting, and it landed both critically and commercially — which is a reasonable reason to take an original horror shooter from the same studio seriously. Its physical edition was handled by Fireshine Games, who we’ve covered recently.
Alien Deathstorm arrives in Spring 2027 on Xbox Series X|S, PC and PlayStation 5, day one on Game Pass. Rebellion say more will be revealed in the run-up to release.
