Cyber Rail has one of the more immediately appealing elevator pitches we’ve read this year: you are a robot cowboy, aboard a flying diesel train, fighting bionic brigands in a series of cybernetic stagecoach shootouts. Torn Ace Studios has just put out the first playable demo on Steam.
Underneath the premise is a precise movement shooter. You’ll grapple, slide, wall-run and sprint through caravans teeming with enemies, with hordes targeting you from every direction and lethal drops around every corner. A well-timed slide or grapple is genuinely the difference between finishing a run and falling off a train.
Movement First
The design lineage here is clear and stated outright by the team — the speed and platforming of classic boomer shooters, crossed with modern movement shooters, wrapped in roguelike structure. That’s a well-trodden combination in its individual parts and a genuinely uncommon one when fused, particularly with a Western skin on top.
Guns With Actual Personality
Between rounds you assemble your arsenal through an in-game shop, and the weapons aren’t just stat variations — each carries unique abilities and secondary fire modes:
The teleporting boomerang is the standout idea. In a game where movement is the survival mechanic, a weapon that doubles as a repositioning tool blurs the line between shooting and traversal — and that’s exactly the sort of design that gives a movement shooter its own identity.
On top of weapons sits a bandolier of passive items. Equip a shield to protect yourself while reloading, or run malware to apply blight damage over time to nearby enemies. The intent is for each run to offer a distinct combat feel depending on how you’ve tuned your kit.
Built for Speedrunners
Designing for speedrunning from day one tends to have knock-on benefits: tight, predictable movement, readable level geometry, and consistent enemy behaviour. Even players with no interest in leaderboards usually benefit from a game built that way.
Who’s Making It
A four-person debut attempting a precision movement shooter with roguelike systems and leaderboard-grade consistency is genuinely ambitious. It’s also exactly the kind of project where an early demo and an open feedback loop make sense — and where playing it now actually matters.
Cyber Rail arrives on Steam in 2027. The demo is available to play right now, and the full game is up for wishlisting.
