Aniplex have revealed a new gameplay trailer, opened physical preorders at retailers, and detailed four editions — including a Limited physical set with a 75-track soundtrack and a SteelBook case.
⚖️ This Is a Ground-Up Remake of the Series’ First RPG
Worth being clear about what Fate/EXTRA Record actually is, because “Fate game” covers an enormous amount of ground these days.
Fate/EXTRA was released in 2010 as the first RPG in the Fate series — a handheld title, and for many Western players the point where Fate stopped being a visual novel franchise and became something you could play.
Record isn’t a port or a remaster. It’s a complete recreation for modern platforms with additional story content, redrawn character designs, and a more strategic deck-building command battle system.
Aniplex’s framing is “familiar, but fresh.” For a sixteen-year-old handheld RPG getting a five-platform simultaneous worldwide release, that’s a substantial vote of confidence in the original’s design.
128 Masters. Seven rounds. One Grail.
You wake up as a second-year student with no memory of who you are or what you’re fighting for, in a virtual school built inside a supercomputer on the moon. Then the tournament starts.
Fate/EXTRA Record has a date. Aniplex have confirmed January 28, 2027 for Steam, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch, releasing worldwide simultaneously, alongside a new trailer showing off the latest gameplay.
Physical preorders are open at retailers from today, with exact timing varying by store, and the Steam page is live for wishlisting.
The Moon Holy Grail War
The premise is one of the stranger ones in the series, and it’s why EXTRA has kept its following. A supercomputer has been discovered on the moon, and the Moon Cell within it has created the Holy Grail — an omnipotent device that grants its owner any wish.
The war for it takes place in SE.RA.PH, a virtual world constructed on the moon, where 128 Masters each command a Servant drawn from the heroes of human history. You play an amnesiac second-year student at Tsukumihara Academy, accompanied by a single Servant, fighting through a seven-round tournament to the death.

The true-name mechanic is the thing that gives EXTRA its identity. You aren’t only out-fighting opponents — you’re investigating them between rounds, working out which historical figure you’re up against so you can exploit the weakness that comes with them. It’s a detective layer wrapped around a card battler, and it’s what makes the seven-round structure feel like a story rather than a gauntlet.
Four Editions — and None of Them Has Everything
🧾 Read This Before You Preorder
This is the detail worth flagging, because it’s easy to miss in the edition tables.
The Limited Edition ($89.99) is physical-only and gets you the 3-disc soundtrack, the SteelBook case and the physical art book. It does not include the DLC outfit packs or the in-game arranged BGM.
The Digital Deluxe ($79.99) gets you the outfits and the arranged BGM plus digital versions of the soundtrack and art book — and Aniplex confirm the digital soundtrack and art book contents are identical to the physical ones.
So there is no single edition that gives you both the physical collectibles and the in-game extras. Aniplex do note that the Deluxe “contains content that can be purchased individually,” so the outfits will likely be buyable separately — but if you want everything, budget for the Limited plus DLC on top.

⚠️ Note the Switch 2 premium. Both physical editions cost $10 more on Switch 2 than on every other platform.
⚠️ Aniplex warn the art book contains significant spoilers and recommend saving it until after you finish the game. Unusually considerate of a publisher to say so on the product page.
The soundtrack is the standout inclusion. Seventy-five tracks across three discs, covering Yoshimasa Terui and Keita Haga‘s work on the new game plus arranged versions of music from the 2010 original. For a series whose soundtracks have always travelled well beyond their games, that’s a genuinely substantial package rather than a token disc.

📺 Narrated by Both Protagonist Voices
Aniplex ran a dedicated showcase programme on the TYPE-MOON YouTube channel on September 4, going into considerably more detail than the trailer covers.
It’s narrated by Atsushi Abe and Yui Ishikawa, the two voices of the Protagonist — Abe known for Toma Kamijo in A Certain Magical Index, Ishikawa for Mikasa Ackerman in Attack on Titan.
If you missed it live, it should be available to watch on the channel. It’s the best look at the game available right now and worth seeking out before you decide on an edition.
Platforms, Language and the Physical Catch
🎮 Five Platforms, But Not for Physical
Fate/EXTRA Record launches on Steam, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch on January 28, 2027, worldwide simultaneously.
Physical editions are only available on PlayStation 5, Switch 2 and Switch. PS4 and PC are digital-only — worth knowing if you were planning to collect it.
Audio is Japanese only, with subtitles in nine languages: Japanese, English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Korean. No English dub has been announced.
