☀️ Hello Sunshine has a new trailer, shown at the PC Gaming Show: Tokyo Direct. It’s a survival mystery set in the sun-scorched ruins of a corporate empire, where your only protection from the heat is the shadow of a giant robot.
⚖️ Your Shelter Walks Around
Survival games usually give you a base: somewhere fixed to retreat to, build up and defend. Hello Sunshine gives you a colossus instead.
The rule is simple: stay out of the sun. Step out of the robot’s shade during the day and the heat will eventually kill you. Stay close and you might make it to nightfall.
That single idea reshapes everything. Your safe zone is mobile, and it’s attached to something with its own path and its own priorities. You’re not choosing where to shelter, you’re keeping pace with the thing sheltering you — and the further you stray to reach something valuable, the more you’re gambling.
Then the sun goes down and the desert turns bitterly cold, so you need to stay near the robot for warmth instead. Either way, you’re tethered to him. The survival mechanic and the story are the same thing.
One rule: stay out of the sun
Who is the Final Employee? What is the white tower at the end of the road? And what happens when the last machine remembers your name?
Publisher Megabit and Norwegian studio Red Thread Games have unveiled a new trailer for Hello Sunshine at the PC Gaming Show: Tokyo Direct.
The footage offers a deeper look at the wasteland left behind by Sunshine, the corporation that sold humanity a brighter future and left behind a scorched world of automated systems still waging a war their creators abandoned. The player scavenges crumbling settlements, salvages parts from downed war machines, and leans on her towering robot companion for shade, protection and survival.
The Robot Starts to Notice You
🤖 A Bond That Builds Over Time
The most interesting thing in the new trailer is the relationship. At first, the colossus barely acknowledges you. You’re something small walking in his shadow.
But the new footage shows him growing more attentive to his human charge, building to a moment where he interacts with the player for the first time — lifting her into his mechanical palm in a set-piece staged against the night sky.
That’s earned through play. You assist with repairs, install upgrades and unlock new ways to interact, and in return the giant starts helping: locating secrets hidden in the desert, lifting you past obstacles, shielding you from threats, and fighting back against hostile war machines.
It’s a neat piece of design. The thing keeping you alive mechanically is also the thing you’re building a relationship with narratively — so progress in one is progress in the other.
☀️ Day: Find Shade
Stay in the robot’s shadow or the heat kills you. Venture further out for greater rewards.
🌙 Night: Stay Warm
The wasteland turns freezing. The robot recharges at a Sunshine Service Station — keep close.
🔧 Camp & Craft
Cook food, craft gear, upgrade equipment and repair the robot after dark.
👤 Strangers
Visitors turn up at camp — and appearances can deceive.
Scavenging and Survival
🔩 What You Do Out There
• Salvage resources from supply drops, storage units, downed war machines, stores and abandoned settlements
• Recycle — at night, use a Sunshine Recycler to break loot down into base components
• Craft gear, tools and weapons to improve your odds
• Upgrade and repair the robot to unlock more of what he can do for you
• Play solo or in co-op with a friend
The risk-reward is built right into the map: the further into the wasteland you push, away from the shade, the better the rewards — and the more likely the sun is to finish you first.
A Story Studio Making a Survival Game
🧵 Red Thread Games
Founded in 2012 and based in downtown Oslo, Red Thread Games was set up with a mission to make “games with soul for players who love stories.”
Its back catalogue is narrative-led: Dreamfall Chapters, the five-part adventure that ran from 2014 to 2016 and later got a Final Cut re-release; Draugen, a first-person adventure that won Norwegian Game of the Year in 2019; and Dustborn in 2024.
That makes Hello Sunshine an interesting turn — a studio known for storytelling building a survival game — though the mystery at its centre, with its Final Employee and white tower, suggests the narrative instincts are still very much driving.
Publisher Megabit is the publishing arm of Aonic, and its upcoming slate also includes Lou’s Lagoon and Verdant from Tiny Roar Studios, and Pathfinder: Abomination Vaults from BKOM Studios.
When Can You Play It?
📅 “Coming Soon” — Due in 2026
Megabit and Red Thread haven’t announced a release date or price for Hello Sunshine. The game is listed as coming soon, and Red Thread’s own studio notes say it’s due for release in 2026.
