Protagonist: Sophia
🐀 Focus Entertainment and Asobo Studio have released a new story trailer for Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, launching August 27. The next chapter in the award-winning series follows Sophia into the depths of Minotaur Island — and toward the untold origins of the Macula.
🎮 Day One on Xbox Game Pass
Resonance arrives on Xbox Game Pass on day one, with Xbox Play Anywhere support. If you’re subscribed, this is effectively a free launch-day play — and Play Anywhere means a single purchase or subscription covers both console and PC.
What should have been the heist of a lifetime for Sophia and her late father’s gang of bandits has gone terribly wrong. Now fleeing Venice to survive, she must forge her own path into the mysteries of Minotaur Island — with only her trusted companion Leni beside her.
A terrible force lurks in the shadows, relentlessly hunting her. There is no safe haven here.
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy lands on August 27 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and the new story trailer digs into what’s waiting beneath Minotaur Island.
True to the series, it ventures into a forgotten world built on the eerily majestic ruins of an ancient civilisation. But this time you’re playing Sophia — a bandit’s daughter with a heist gone catastrophically wrong behind her — as the game unravels her early years and confronts the reality behind legendary myths.
Playable at Gamescom — at Two Booths
🎪 Hands-On at Gamescom, Days Before Launch
Resonance will be present and playable at Gamescom, at both the Focus Entertainment and Xbox booths. With the game launching August 27, that puts a public hands-on within days of release — and having it at two separate booths should make queue times considerably more manageable than a single-stand showing.
For anyone attending, it’s a rare chance to try one of the show’s higher-profile titles right before it goes out. Focus have a solid record of putting genuinely representative builds on the show floor rather than heavily-guided vertical slices.
Sophia Fights Back
⚔️ A Real Departure for the Series
One of the behind-the-scenes videos, “Fierce and Lethal,” details Sophia’s arsenal: chained sword strikes, dagger attacks, parries and kicks.
That’s a meaningful shift. A Plague Tale has historically built its tension around vulnerability — improvised tools, avoidance, and the constant sense of being outmatched. A protagonist described as strong and agile in combat, with a full melee kit and parry timing, is a different kind of game underneath the same atmosphere.
Focus are careful to note that despite Sophia’s capability, this remains “a grim race against the past” offering no safe haven — so the combat expansion doesn’t appear to come with a corresponding drop in threat. Whether that balance lands is the most interesting open question about the game.
The other mechanical thread is light. The “Look for the Light” video explains that navigating Resonance’s pitch-black depths requires staying in the light and using it to your advantage — a natural evolution of the series’ signature relationship with illumination, now reframed as a navigation and survival problem rather than purely a defensive one.
Five Behind-the-Scenes Videos Are Already Out
Focus have released a series of short videos ahead of launch, with more promised, covering different facets of the game:
◆
The Scenery — a look at the environments, from the bustling streets of Venice to the dark landscapes of Minotaur Island.
◆
Look for the Light — navigating the pitch-black depths, and using light to your advantage.
◆
Know Your Opponents — studying your foes to gain the upper hand in combat.
◆
Sophia — the backstory and motivations of the heroine at the game’s heart.
◆
Fierce and Lethal — mastering Sophia’s arsenal of sword strikes, daggers, parries and kicks.
All five are on Focus Entertainment’s social channels, and it’s a decent pre-launch drip — each one isolates a single system rather than trying to sell the whole game at once.
For Series Fans: The Macula
The lore hook here is significant. Resonance promises to uncover the untold origins of the Macula — the affliction at the centre of the series’ mythology — while confronting the reality behind legendary myths.
For anyone invested in the setting, that’s the real draw. Filling in where the Macula came from reframes everything that follows it, and doing so via a new protagonist in a new location suggests Asobo are expanding the world rather than simply revisiting it.
