🆓 There’s a Free Edition — and Dovetail Didn’t Mention It
Worth flagging, because it isn’t in the announcement text at all. The edition comparison chart shows a FREE EDITION of Train Sim World 7 alongside the three paid tiers.
It includes the Training Center — the series’ tutorial and practice environment — with the routes and locomotives gated behind the paid editions. That’s a genuine no-cost entry point for anyone curious about whether train simulation is for them, and given the Standard Edition starts at $44.99, it’s a useful thing to know exists.
Bavaria, Yorkshire and Miami — on the same ticket
Train Sim World 7 is the newest entry in Dovetail Games’ long-running rail simulation series, and it arrives on September 15 across PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S — with Early Access from September 10 for anyone pre-ordering the Deluxe or Ultimate editions.
The headline additions are three new routes and six new locomotives spanning Germany, England and Florida. The more interesting changes are the ones that alter how you play it.
Live Weather Is the Genuinely Novel One
🌦️ Your Actual Weather, In the Game
Dovetail describe Live Weather as syncing your in-game conditions to what’s outside your own window — so the simulation reflects the real weather where you are, wherever in the world that happens to be.
That’s an unusual immersion choice, and a slightly philosophical one. Most simulators chase authenticity by modelling the destination. This ties the experience to the player’s own environment instead, so a wet Tuesday in Manchester follows you onto a Florida commuter line.
⚠️ Worth noting the announcement is a little ambiguous here — the examples given (“driving in Miami? Experience in-game sunshine!”) could also read as route-local real weather. We’d expect Dovetail to clarify before launch, and it’s worth checking which you’re getting if it matters to you.
Two Modes for Two Very Different Players
🎮 Simplified Controls: Just an Accelerator and a Brake
For a franchise built on intimidating authenticity, this is a significant move. The new Simplified Controls option reduces driving to accelerator and brake — nothing else.
Train simulation has a well-earned reputation for being impenetrable, with cabs full of switches that must be operated in the correct order before the thing will move at all. Offering a mode where you can simply set off and watch the countryside is a direct attempt to convert the people who’ve always been curious but assumed it wasn’t for them.
At the other end, Freight Hauler Mode goes the opposite way: freight-focused gameplay with no instructions and no schedules — marshal your load to its destination however you like, at your own pace.
Those two additions bracket the audience neatly. One removes the barrier to entry entirely; the other removes the structure for people who’d rather just be left alone with a job to do. Both point at the same underlying idea, which co-CEO Rob O’Farrell states directly.

🚄 The ICE 4 Is the One People Have Been Asking For
Dovetail call it one of the most highly anticipated locomotives in Train Sim World history, and it’s the clear centrepiece of this release. The German high-speed unit reaches 265km/h and gets a purpose-built 105km stretch between Nürnberg and Würzburg to actually use that speed on.
Long-requested rolling stock is the currency this community deals in, and leading with a loco players have specifically asked for is a smarter opening move than any feature list.

Prices shown include the current 10% pre-order discount. The six extra add-ons in the Ultimate Edition are Leipzig–Dresden, the Morristown Line, the Riviera Line, the DB BR 294 Shunter, the NJ TRANSIT ALP-45DP and the Cross Country BR Class 220.
The structure is worth understanding before you buy. Standard gets you all three new routes but none of the three headline locomotives — including the ICE 4, which is the loco Dovetail are leading the entire announcement with. If the ICE 4 is why you’re interested, Standard isn’t the edition you want.
PC Gets an “Epic” Settings Tier
Alongside the new content, PC players get a new “Epic” graphical setting bringing improved visual fidelity, better lighting and longer draw distances. Dovetail also list faster load times, quicker cameras, NPC guard functionality and safety systems enabled by default.
The load times and camera responsiveness are arguably the more meaningful entries there. Visual upgrades are easy to show in a trailer; a simulator that stops making you wait is the sort of improvement you feel every session.
