Game: WARDOGS
Developer: BULKHEAD
Publisher: Team17
Genre: 100-Player Tactical FPS
Status: Steam Early Access, out now
Milestone: 1,000,000+ copies sold
Consoles: PS5 & Xbox in 2028
Beta Peak: 245,118 concurrent
🎖️ WARDOGS has passed one million copies sold on the day it entered Steam Early Access. BULKHEAD and Team17’s 100-player tactical FPS hit a million Steam wishlists in August — and roughly a month later, it has converted that into more than a million sales at launch.
⚖️ They Published Ten Reasons Not to Buy It
This is the part worth stopping on, because it is genuinely unusual.
In the run-up to launch, BULKHEAD ran a campaign that — in CEO Joe Brammer’s own words — “literally gave everyone ten reasons not to buy it.” The stated aim was to show people exactly what WARDOGS is and, more importantly, what it isn’t.
“We didn’t want people buying into blind hype,” Brammer said.
Every instinct in games marketing runs the other way. Wishlists are the currency, hype is the engine, and the standard playbook is to keep expectations as high as possible for as long as possible and deal with the fallout after the refund window closes.
BULKHEAD did the opposite, at a million wishlists, with everything to lose — and sold a million copies anyway.
A hundred players. One battlefield.
“To cross a million copies sold as we launch into early access is mental.” — Joe Brammer, CEO, BULKHEAD
WARDOGS is available now in Steam Early Access, and BULKHEAD and Team17 have confirmed it has already surpassed one million copies sold.
The 100-player tactical FPS arrives off the back of one of the steeper wishlist curves in recent memory, and a pre-launch testing programme that pulled numbers most released games never see.
The Numbers Behind the Launch
📈 100K in 3 Days
WARDOGS hit 100,000 Steam wishlists within three days of its reveal.
🚀 500K by May
Half a million wishlists, then one million by August.
🎮 ~500K in Beta
Nearly half a million players joined the August Closed Beta.
⚡ 245,118 Peak
Concurrent players on Steam during the final pre-launch test.
📊 The Conversion Is the Remarkable Bit
A million wishlists is a big number. Turning a million wishlists into a million sales inside roughly a month is a much bigger one.
Wishlists are notoriously soft currency. They cost nothing, they accumulate from people who’ll never buy, and a substantial chunk of any wishlist sits dormant for years. Studios plan around a fraction converting at launch.
WARDOGS landing at a one-to-one ratio — even accounting for buyers who never wishlisted at all — is an unusually strong showing, and it suggests the pre-launch testing did its job. Half a million people had already played it. They weren’t buying a trailer.
That 245,118 concurrent peak in a test is the other tell. Plenty of fully released multiplayer games would take that as a career high.
There’s $100,000 on the Table
🎬 Read the Prize Structure Carefully
BULKHEAD are running the #WARDOGS100K Clip Contest, hunting the best plays, biggest fails and most chaotic moments the community can produce.
The prizes, stated plainly because the wording could easily be misread:
• The single best overall clip wins $100,000 in actual cash.
• The remaining 99 in the Top 100 each receive $100,000 in WARDOGS in-game cash — not real money.
So it’s one real prize and ninety-nine in-game ones, all using the same headline figure. That’s a clever bit of framing and there’s nothing wrong with it, but it’s worth being clear about before anyone spends a weekend farming clips under the wrong impression.

Consoles Are a Long Way Out
🎮 PlayStation 5 and Xbox in 2028
Worth flagging clearly: WARDOGS is PC-only for now, and the console versions aren’t due until 2028.
That’s more than two years away, which is a long runway even by Early Access standards — and a long time to keep a live 100-player shooter healthy on a single platform before the audience widens.
Wishlisting is open on both storefronts from today, so BULKHEAD are clearly building console demand early. But if you’re on console and reading a million-copies headline, the practical answer is that you’ve got a wait.
Brammer was careful to temper the milestone in the same statement, which is the right instinct: “But this is still early access. We’ve got things to fix, things we want to improve and a lot more we want to build.” His ask of players was simply to keep playing and keep saying what they think.
Where to Get It
💻 Steam Early Access, Out Now
WARDOGS is available now on PC via Steam Early Access. No price has been given in the announcement, so check the store page.
PlayStation 5 and Xbox versions arrive in 2028, with wishlisting open on both from today.
Given this is Early Access with a stated list of things still to fix, the usual caveat applies with more force than usual: buy it for what it is now, not what it’s promised to become. A million people have already decided that’s a reasonable bet.

Who’s Making It
🏗️ BULKHEAD
The developer behind WARDOGS, led by CEO Joe Brammer. Their pre-launch approach — extensive open testing, unfiltered community clips, and a campaign actively listing reasons not to buy — is a notably different posture to the industry norm, and it appears to have worked.
🐛 Team17
Publishing WARDOGS. One of the longest-running names in British games, and a publisher with a deep track record across both its own franchises and third-party indie work.
🗣️ On What Comes Next
Brammer’s closing line is the one to hold them to: “The best thing players can do now is keep playing, keep telling us what they think and keep giving us those ridiculous WARDOGS moments.” A studio that asked for criticism before launch has set a standard for how it handles criticism after one.
WARDOGS is available now in Steam Early Access, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox versions to follow in 2028.
