Dotemu have shadowdropped Blasterbug: Last Bug Standing! on Steam with no prior announcement, and it costs nothing — permanently, with no strings attached.
Fifteen playable characters, fifteen arenas, five modes and eight-player local multiplayer, given away as a thank you to retro gaming fans. The only paid content is a single $1.99 Absolum crossover pack, which is entirely optional.
Dotemu’s own framing is worth repeating: they’re pitching it as “a refreshing break from everything in life getting more expensive.” Cheeky, and hard to argue with.

Blasterbug: Last Bug Standing! is a bomb-’em-up party game about colourful insects blowing each other up in ever-changing arenas, and it turned up on Steam without warning during the Pixel Arcadia retro showcase.
It’s from Dotemu — the studio behind Streets of Rage 4, TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge and Windjammers 2 — and it’s free.
Eight Players, Locally, in 2026
🛋️ Same Room, Same Screen, Eight People
This is the part worth pausing on. Blasterbug supports up to eight players in local multiplayer — not online, not matchmade. Everyone in the same room.
Eight-player couch multiplayer was never especially common and has become genuinely rare. Pairing it with a free download removes the last friction entirely: nobody needs to own a copy, nobody needs an account, and the only requirement is enough controllers and enough sofa.
For a game living or dying on people shouting at each other, that’s exactly the right set of decisions.
The format is familiar in the best way — grid-based bomb-laying in the Bomberman tradition, with each of the fifteen characters carrying their own gameplay quirks and special attacks to learn. Level modifiers keep individual rounds from settling into a pattern.

Richest bug wins — survival matters less than accumulation.

Grab the crown and hold onto it while everyone else objects.

🎉 Party Battle
All of the above, mixed together into one escalating session.
Party Battle is the smart inclusion. Rotating through every mode in a single sitting is how party games actually get played, and building it in as its own option saves somebody having to organise it.
Fifteen Arenas That Fight Back
🍳 Watch Out for the Spoon
Each of the fifteen areas comes with its own gameplay twist, and Dotemu have picked settings that give the hazards personality:
• Bugville — trap your opponents in the streets
• The Sewers — currents that drag you where you didn’t intend to go
• The Kitchen — where a descending spoon does exactly what a spoon would do to a beetle
The advice from Dotemu is the correct advice for this genre: don’t just fight the other players, use the room against them.
The Only Paid Thing Is an Absolum Crossover
⚔️ Galandra Joins the Swarm — $1.99
The single piece of paid content is the Absolum Pack, which brings Galandra — the blade-wielding hero from Dotemu’s 2025 breakout rogue-’em-up — into the arena, along with the Jaroba stage channelling Absolum’s fantasy setting.
She arrives with her colossal sword and her Necrotic Wave ability, which is a considerable escalation from being a bug with a bomb.
Two dollars for a crossover character and a stage, sitting on top of a game that costs nothing, is about as unobjectionable as monetisation gets — and it doubles as a neat piece of cross-promotion for Absolum.
