🎪 CRITICAL REFLEX had a busy gamescom. A new animated trailer for TANUKI: Pon’s Summer at the Future Games Show, a 2027 window and day-one Game Pass confirmation for Militsioner, a Best Visuals award nomination for Inkblood — and four things from the show floor you can actually play or sign up for right now.
🦝 The Headline: A Tanuki With a Post Office Job and a BMXTANUKI: Pon’s Summer got the week’s showcase moment, debuting a brand-new animated trailer during the Future Games Show’s Live From Gamescom broadcast.
You play Pon — a well-meaning, slightly lazy tanuki working part-time at the post office. Deliver packages, pull BMX tricks, help the locals, and gather what you need to restore the Great Tanuki Shrine before the end-of-summer Matsuri festival.
Developer Denkiworks is Kyoto-based, and the world is drawn from real places the team know — Kyoto, Aomori, Sapporo and Beppu. That specificity is why the town reads as somewhere rather than as generic anime-summer wallpaper.
One month until the festival. The shrine is a wreck.
A cozy slice-of-life game about delivering mail, with a trick system that would not be out of place in a Tony Hawk game.
Gamescom 2026 has wrapped, and CRITICAL REFLEX came out of it with a full week’s worth of news across five games. The headline reveal was a new animated trailer for TANUKI: Pon’s Summer, but there’s a release window, a Game Pass confirmation and an award nomination in here too — plus, for anyone who wasn’t in Cologne, several things you can play at home today.
The Trick System Is Doing More Than It Needs To
🚲 Backflips, Superman Moves and Rail Grinds
Here’s the thing that keeps surprising people who try the demo expecting a gentle courier sim. Pon’s BMX supports backflips, double backflips, Superman moves, rail-grinds and rail-hops — a trick vocabulary with real depth behind it.
What makes it work is that it’s forgiving on purpose. Land at an awkward angle with the wrong momentum and the game quietly corrects you and rolls you onward rather than dumping you on the tarmac.
That’s a deliberate call, and the right one. Tricks become something you throw out casually while coasting between deliveries rather than a discipline you have to master before the game becomes fun. The traversal carries the downtime, which in a game built around going from A to B is most of the runtime.
Around the riding sits a proper slice-of-life spread: bug catching, fishing, baseball, sumo, plating sushi, karaoke and taiko drums, with an emoji-based dialogue system for managing relationships with the townsfolk. You can befriend them. You can also, per the developers, annoy them.
💾 The Demo Isn’t Really a Demo
This is the practical detail worth acting on. The current Steam demo covers the opening three days of the full game — roughly two to three hours, with six quests, BMX challenges, the BMX Respray Shop and the early shrine restoration work.
And crucially: Denkiworks have confirmed that your demo progress carries over into the full game. They describe it less as a demo than as the first arc of the game slipping out early.
So if the trailer lands for you, time spent in the demo isn’t time you’ll be repeating later. That’s a genuinely player-friendly way to run a demo and more studios should do it.
There’s still no release date for the full game. Given the demo has grown from a first-area slice into a three-day opening chapter over the past year, it’s clearly moving — but CRITICAL REFLEX haven’t put a window on it.
Militsioner Locked In 2027 and Game Pass
The other major beat of the week was Militsioner, the kafkaesque immersive sim from TALLBOYS about escaping a city while a policeman the size of an apartment block watches you. It was confirmed during the Xbox @ Gamescom Showcase for 2027 on Steam, the Microsoft Store and Xbox Series X|S, with a day one launch on Game Pass for PC and console.
One detail that’s firmed up since the initial announcement: the game will also support Xbox Play Anywhere, so a single digital purchase covers both console and PC with shared progress. We covered the full announcement — including the relationship system, the ticket-gate example of how its multiple solutions work, and the part where you can take the Giant on a date — in our Militsioner announcement piece.
Four Things You Can Play or Sign Up For Today
This is the most useful part of the announcement for anyone who wasn’t in Cologne. Several of CRITICAL REFLEX’s show floor line-up are available right now.
🍳 SATED
Grimy cooking roguelike. First playtest sign-ups are open — this one isn’t playable yet, but you can register.
🌃 Altered Alma
Atmospheric cyberpunk Metroidvania. Demo available now on Steam.
🌀 Being and Becoming
Surreal pixel-art Metroidvania. Demo available now on Steam.
🦝 TANUKI: Pon’s Summer
The three-day opening chapter, with progress carrying into the full game. Demo on Steam.
Of the four, TANUKI is the one we’d start with given the progress carry-over — you’re effectively playing the real game rather than a sales pitch. SATED’s playtest sign-up is the one to register for early if grimy roguelike cooking is your thing, since playtest slots tend to be capped.
Inkblood Picks Up a Nomination
Capping the week, the upcoming occult detective game Inkblood received a nomination for Best Visuals at the gamescom awards.
Worth noting what that represents for a publisher this size. The gamescom award categories put indie titles up against the largest productions in the industry, so a Best Visuals nod for an occult detective game from a boutique label is a meaningful signal about art direction rather than a participation trophy. CRITICAL REFLEX’s whole pitch is polishing the weird, and this is the weird getting noticed on the biggest floor in the business.

Who’s Behind It
🔥 CRITICAL REFLEX
An indie publisher with a remarkable recent run — Buckshot Roulette, Lunacid, Mouthwashing and No, I’m not a Human are all theirs. Their stated remit is genre-blending, rule-breaking games, and their own line on it is that genre is a prison and they ate the warden.
⚡ Denkiworks — Kyoto, Japan
The team behind TANUKI: Pon’s Summer, formed by developers who previously made Cursed to Golf. Going from a roguelike golf game to a cozy BMX courier sim is a reasonable illustration of why they and CRITICAL REFLEX ended up working together.
👻 CR Channel
CRITICAL REFLEX’s publishing label focused exclusively on indie horror, with its own community Discord.
Militsioner arrives in 2027. TANUKI: Pon’s Summer has no date yet, but the demo is on Steam now — and what you do in it counts.
