⚠️ Content note: Update 0.5 adds narcotics production and smuggling as a core gameplay loop. Gray Zone Warfare is a mature tactical shooter set in an armed-conflict zone, and this content is a deliberate part of that setting rather than an aside.
🪖 Gray Zone Warfare’s Update 0.5 lands this fall and takes the game from Pre-Alpha into Alpha. It brings a player hideout with crafting labs, drug smuggling, three substantial new locations, up to four playable characters, and a full separation of PvE and PvEvP progression. All editions are 30% off until September 15 to mark 1.7 million copies sold.
⚖️ Pre-Alpha to Alpha — What That Actually Means
Worth explaining, because it looks strange at a glance: Gray Zone Warfare has sold 1.7 million copies, spent two and a half years in Early Access, and is only now leaving Pre-Alpha.
That isn’t a comment on the state of the game. It’s MADFINGER’s own internal versioning, and they’ve always been unusually candid about where they think they are on a long road — the studio said from the outset that Early Access could run for several years.
What the label actually signals is scope. Pre-Alpha was about building the foundation. Alpha is where MADFINGER start layering the systems that lead somewhere — and 0.5’s headline addition, the hideout, is explicitly described as the path to the game’s endgame.
Plenty of studios would have called this 1.0 eighteen months ago. That they haven’t is arguably the most reassuring thing in the announcement.
Build the lab. Move the product. Don’t get caught.
Everything you cook in your hideout still has to get off the island — past players from three rival factions who would very much like to take it from you.
MADFINGER Games has announced Update 0.5 for Gray Zone Warfare, arriving this fall and moving the PvE-first tactical shooter into its Alpha development stage. It’s the largest expansion the game has had, adding an entirely new gameplay layer on top of the existing mission loop.
The trailer premiered today during the FPS Games Show, a new showcase dedicated to first-person shooters streaming exclusively on Twitch. Alongside it, MADFINGER are marking 1.7 million copies sold with a 30% discount on every edition until September 15.
The Hideout Is the New Loop
🏚️ Somewhere to Put Everything You’ve Earned
This is the structural addition, and it changes what money is for in Gray Zone Warfare.
Players will build their own hideout, sinking hard-earned resources into advanced laboratories capable of producing rare items and valuable contraband. MADFINGER describe it as something that will continue to evolve and ultimately open the path to the endgame.
Up to now the loop has been claim a task, travel, clear hostiles, complete the objective, repeat — a criticism that turns up regularly in player reviews. A persistent base that converts loot into production capacity gives that grind a destination, which is exactly what it’s been missing.
💊 And Then You Have to Get It Off the Island
The first named use for those labs is narcotics — and producing them is only half the job. You then have to smuggle the product off Lamang.
MADFINGER are upfront that this carries substantial rewards and enormous risk, because players from rival factions will be able to hunt smugglers down.
That’s a genuinely clever piece of design for a game with an existing faction structure. It creates PvP with a reason — you’re not fighting over a contested zone because the game told you to, you’re fighting because someone is carrying something worth taking. Emergent conflict driven by cargo rather than objectives is a much better engine for player stories, and it’s the single most interesting thing in this announcement.
Three New Locations, Each With a Story Attached
The map of Lamang gets several new additions, and MADFINGER are explicit that these aren’t just fresh loot rooms — the detail work is intended to significantly expand the game’s lore. Three have been named so far.
📡 The Radar
A massive multi-level installation with extensive vertical architecture, built around high-value loot.
🏚️ The Asylum
Long, haunting corridors still bearing traces of the torture routinely carried out there under the island’s dictator.
🎖️ The Military Camp
A fully reconstructed base on the edge of Ground Zero, with well-trained enemies and secrets about the first expeditions.
🗺️ And More
MADFINGER say further locations and content will be revealed through official channels ahead of release.
The Asylum is the one that stands out. Gray Zone Warfare’s environmental storytelling has always been one of its quieter strengths — a world you can read rather than one that stops to explain itself — and a location built around what the regime did to people who got in its way is a considerably darker use of that than a looted village. The Military Camp, meanwhile, promises answers about the first expeditions into Ground Zero, which is the mystery the whole game hangs on.
Four Characters, and a Change Existing Players Will Argue About
👥 Up to Four Playable Characters
A straightforwardly good change: you’ll be able to create up to four characters, letting you experience every faction and — more practically — team up with friends far more easily.
In a game where your faction determines who you can squad with, being locked to one character has always been a real friction point for groups. Four slots effectively solves it.
The other change is more contentious. Progression between game modes will be completely separated. Players will no longer be able to stockpile equipment in PvE and carry it into the tougher PvEvP world.
That is, in balance terms, obviously correct — farming a safe environment to gear up for a dangerous one undercuts the risk that makes PvEvP work at all. It is also going to annoy people who have been doing exactly that for two years, and who may find a chunk of their accumulated advantage stranded on the wrong side of a wall. Expect that to be the loudest thread in the community when 0.5 lands.
The Sale, and the Showcase
🏷️ 30% Off Until September 15
All editions of Gray Zone Warfare are discounted 30% until September 15, marking 1.7 million copies sold. The game sits at Mostly Positive on Steam — around 74% across more than 46,000 reviews, with the recent 30-day trend holding steady at roughly 72%.
It’s PC-only via Steam, still in Early Access, and built in Unreal Engine 5 across a 42 km² island.
The trailer debuted at the FPS Games Show, a brand-new showcase dedicated entirely to first-person shooters, streaming exclusively on Twitch. Worth keeping an eye on as a fixture — a genre-specific showcase is a sensible idea in a calendar increasingly crowded with generalist ones.

Who’s Making It
🇨🇿 MADFINGER Games
A Czech studio founded in 2010, and for most of its history a mobile developer — Shadowgun, Dead Trigger and Shadowgun Legends were theirs. Gray Zone Warfare is their first PC title and a substantial departure, built in Unreal Engine 5 as a PvE-first open-world tactical shooter.
💰 The Game That Saved the Studio
Worth knowing as context for how carefully they’re pacing this. By MADFINGER’s own account, the studio entered 2024 with limited resources and almost no money left to cover salaries, with everything riding on one project. Gray Zone Warfare’s April 2024 Early Access launch secured the company’s financial stability, and they’ve since grown the team considerably. Their Steam score has climbed from 68% to the mid-70s over that period.
🗣️ Tomáš Nawar — Spokesperson, MADFINGER Games
“We’re incredibly excited to announce another major update that introduces game-changing features such as the hideout, crafting, drug smuggling, multiple playable characters, and incredible new locations. The highly detailed design of these new locations will also significantly expand the game’s lore.”
Update 0.5 arrives this fall. No specific date has been given, and MADFINGER say further details will be revealed gradually through their official channels.
