The Lord of the Rings: War in the North — Legacy Edition revives the 2011 action RPG originally built by Snowblind Studios, updated with a set of modern enhancements and now published by Aspyr.
The premise remains its best asset. Rather than retelling the Fellowship’s journey for the hundredth time, War in the North follows a parallel conflict entirely — the campaign against Agandaûr, a Black Númenórean and servant of Sauron who has gathered an immense force in the ruins of Fornost. It’s a darker, grittier corner of Tolkien’s legendarium, and one the films never touched.
Build Your Own Fellowship
The stealthy option — precision and positioning over brute force.
The magical route, handling crowd control and support duties.
The tank — front-line durability and heavy damage absorption.
The three heroes anchor the whole design. You can play with up to three players online or two in local split-screen, and the party composition genuinely matters given how distinctly the roles are drawn.
Progression is deep for a game of its era — customise your hero and party with unique skills, abilities and gear, collect weapons and armour, and call in the Great Eagle Beleram to strike from the sky when a fight turns against you.
What’s Actually New in Legacy Edition
The hot-swapping and AI ally customisation is the standout addition, and it’s aimed squarely at solo players. In the original, playing alone meant accepting whatever your computer-controlled companions did with their own gear and skills. Being able to fully outfit them turns a three-hero party into something you actually control rather than something you hope cooperates.
Triggering Secrets is a smaller but similarly thoughtful fix. In the original, each hero could spot things the others couldn’t, which meant solo players simply missed content depending on who they’d picked. Surfacing all of it regardless of your choice removes a frustration that only ever punished people playing alone.
Command a Great Eagle to strike from the sky and turn the tide of a battle that’s going badly.
Encounter Aragorn, Gandalf and Elrond as your own campaign brushes against the wider war.
Journey through Rivendell, Lórien and the foggy paths of Mirkwood.
Ruthless Orcs, deadly Wargs, spectral Barrow-wights and Agandaûr’s dark sorcery, in a notably mature take on Tolkien.
Aspyr’s First Middle-earth Game — With More Promised
That’s the forward-looking detail worth noting. Aspyr have built a specialism in bringing back older catalogue titles — recent work includes Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration on Switch 2, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered, and Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered.
Applying that treatment to the Middle-earth back catalogue opens some genuinely interesting possibilities, given how many well-regarded Tolkien games have become difficult to access over the years. War in the North being the opening move suggests they’re starting with titles that deserved more attention than they got.
The Lord of the Rings: War in the North — Legacy Edition is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store and GOG for $19.99, with 10% off through August 24. Switch 2 owners in Europe should note the August 18 eShop date.
