🪡 The Needle-in-a-Haystack Game You Can Play Tonight
You probably saw the haystack. In late August, a clip of Needle In A Haystack Simulator (a game about finding a single needle among 5 million pieces of hay) racked up tens of millions of views on X, and a wave of lookalike games quickly followed on Steam. The game itself was only announced, with a release planned for later this year.
Wristwork and Tiny Dragon would like you to know that their game has been a needle-in-a-haystack game since before it was cool, and you can play it right now. In Pigeon: A Love Story, the needle is one specific pigeon, the haystack is an entire real-world city full of birds, and, as the studio points out, unlike hay, your needle can fly away from you.
It’s all said with plenty of affection. The publisher calls the haystack wave one of the funniest things to happen to Steam this year: “We simply have a horse in this race, and the horse is a pigeon.”
Millions of pigeons. One true soulmate. Good luck.
Pigeon: A Love Story is a cosy needle-in-a-haystack simulator. You’re a lonely pigeon soaring over full-scale replicas of real cities, calling out to the birds around you in search of your one pigeon-shaped soulmate. Most will politely turn you down, some might drop the occasional clue, and one of them, somewhere, is waiting for you. The studio’s own description sums it up: it’s “a slow game for fast times.”
Four Reasons Pigeons Beat Hay
Wristwork made its case with a four-point argument, and honestly, it’s hard to fault:
🏃 It Moves
Hay waits patiently to be picked up. A pigeon has somewhere to be.
💘 It’s a Love Story
Hay can’t take you on a journey of romantic possibility (and rejection).
🗺️ Real Cities
Built from OpenStreetMap data, so the London you search is the real London, down to your own street.
📅 It’s Out Now
No waiting months. It’s on Steam and mobile today, with a free PC demo.
Finding a single pigeon among millions while soaring over massive cities is absurdly charming and surprisingly meditative.

Five Cities, Every Pigeon
You can fly through life-size maps of London, New York, Tokyo, Paris and Amsterdam, with every building, every street, and, according to the developers, every pigeon (“we did the math”). Wristwork’s Pigeon-Sim™ technology runs hundreds of thousands of autonomous pigeons flying and interacting in a real-time, city-wide simulation.
🕊️ Ways to Play
• Multiplayer “Coo-op” with up to eight friends, across two modes: find each other, or race to be the first to find your soulmate
• Passive Mode lets the game play itself, screensaver-style, when you just want to birdwatch
• Speak-to-Coo: optionally coo into your microphone to call out in-game
• An original soundtrack by Madwreck, made to lock in and zen out to
What Players Are Saying
Steam players have given it a Very Positive rating, with 50 of its 53 reviews recommending it. They describe it as cosy, adorable and relaxing, enjoying the flight over real landmarks (one player was thrilled to spot their own building), the soundtrack, and the variety of witty rejection lines. One of the most dedicated players, at more than 11 hours, praised the full-scale cities, passive mode and eight-player co-op, but noted that the rejections can get repetitive and that there isn’t much progression. Another hoped for more maps and skins.
