Shift at Midnight, the online co-op detective horror game from Australian solo developer Bun Muen, is out now on PC and Xbox Series X|S for $9.99 / £9.99 / €9.99 — and it’s on Game Pass from day one across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Up to three players work together across randomly generated shifts, running a gas station and investigating their customers — some of whom are only pretending to be human. Make one mistake and you’ll be boarding up doors, laying traps, and hiding from what comes back through them.
Three Jobs, One Shift
What makes Shift at Midnight click is that it’s really three games layered on top of each other, and they escalate in exactly that order.
Keep the shelves stocked, take deliveries, clean up, serve customers, and sell enough to hit your nightly quota. Every shift is randomly generated, so no two are the same.
Ask each customer up to five questions, examine their ID, cross-check details on the computer, and watch how they behave. Confirm they’re human before you let them walk out.
Miss one and it comes back as something far worse. Barricade the doors, lay traps, and find somewhere to hide. Survival stops being guaranteed.
Five Questions and a Judgment Call
That’s the tension the whole game hangs on. There’s no perfect information, just five questions and a gut feeling, and both possible mistakes carry a cost — let a doppelganger walk and it returns mid-shift to kill you and your friends, or execute an actual human being and deal with the consequences of that instead.
Better With Friends (and Proximity Chat)
Multiplayer is explicitly where the game thrives, and proximity chat is doing a lot of the heavy lifting. Working together — or, as the developer puts it, at least being together — changes the whole dynamic when you’re comparing notes on a customer who answered question three a little too smoothly. And once the barricades go up, hearing a friend’s voice fade as they run for a hiding spot is the sort of thing proximity chat was invented for.
Every night is procedurally assembled, so no two shifts play out the same way. Fresh customers, fresh suspicions.
Voice fades with distance, turning coordination — and panic — into a genuine mechanic rather than a menu option.
Stock, deliveries, cleaning, and sales quotas. The mundane work is the calm before things go wrong.
Kit out your night-shift worker before you clock in for another evening of retail and existential dread.
Bundled With Some Familiar Company
That’s telling company to keep. Phasmophobia in particular is the genre’s benchmark for tense, communication-driven co-op horror, and pairing with it signals fairly clearly who Shift at Midnight thinks its audience is — players who want investigation and paranoia rather than combat.
