Genre: Historical tank MMO
🪖 Steel Aces is out now in Early Access on Armative Studios’ own platform. The free-to-play tank MMO launched on October 30, and the Steam version is due early next week, once Valve finishes its review of the final build. It packs 150+ historically authentic tanks, and there’s no pay-to-win.
🎯 Skill Wins, Not Spending
Steel Aces is tanks and nothing else. There’s no player-controlled artillery, no aircraft, no premium ammo and no unfair RNG. Battles come down to tactics, positioning and shot placement.
Under the hood, it runs a genuine ballistics simulation with component-based damage, so you’re not just whittling down a health bar. Hit the drivetrain and you can stop a tank in its tracks. Shoot a cupola five times, and you’ll learn that it doesn’t work.
The tank game that never was, made by three people in Germany.
Here’s an unusual one. Steel Aces is a free-to-play tank MMO made by Armative Studios, a team of just three developers in Germany with backgrounds in engineering, automotive and games. It spans more than 100 years of armoured warfare, with over 150 vehicles from the Interwar Period and World War II through to the early Cold War. It was developed in collaboration with military museums and partners with hands-on tank experience, including former 4th Royal Tank Regiment soldier turned military artist Mick Graham.
How Steel Aces Plays
👁️ Line of Sight
Just tanks, terrain and the tension of danger behind the next ridge.
💥 Real Ballistics
Learn how armour and ammunition interact, and how a tank works inside.
⚖️ Fair Matchmaking
19 ranks and a ±1 matchmaking range, so newcomers don’t face maxed-out veterans.
🏅 Earned, Not Bought
Vehicles must be earned. You can’t buy your way into the high ranks.
🔧 What Changed Since the Open Play Weekend
Armative used feedback from September’s Open Play Weekend to rework a lot before Early Access:
• Tank handling: reworked tracked-vehicle traction, steering and engine simulation for more stable, responsive driving
• UI: clearer ammunition and loadout selection, plus a more readable in-game HUD
• Balance: a refined vision system, gun dispersion, aiming stats and vehicle progression paths
“We’re incredibly excited to finally put Steel Aces in the hands of players and welcome everyone to the battlefield. This is a major milestone for our team, and we can’t wait for players to experience what we’ve been building and put their strategic skills to the test.”
Michael Schmotz, CEO at Armative Studios
💰 How It Makes Money
Armative says monetisation is focused on accelerated progression, cosmetics and collecting, such as paint jobs, decals and rare prototype vehicles. There are no loot boxes or gambling mechanics, and no premium ammunition. The Steam version requires a Steel Aces account, which can be linked to your Steam account.
