๐ฅ Yes, That’s the Same Day as Grand Theft Auto VI
Devolver Digital have been threatening this one for a while, and they’ve followed through: Volvy’s Adventure: Reslimed launches November 19 โ directly opposite the most anticipated game of the decade.
Their pitch, more or less verbatim, is that you can pre-order Volvy for 25% off a $4.99 base price, or you can go and spend a hundred dollars on Grand Theft Auto VI “like some sucker.”
Counter-programming the industry’s biggest release is a bit Devolver have run before, but rarely this bluntly. A five-dollar platformer against the year’s largest launch is about as pure a version of the joke as they’ve managed.

Adventure is in your big hand
Some warlocks released some slime. Volvy is stopping them. They also kidnapped his friends. That’s the story, and Devolver would like you to know they’re aware it’s the story.
Volvy’s Adventure: Reslimed is an action platformer about a small green creature with one enormous hand, four worlds of enemies to get through, and an onion habit. It arrives on Steam November 19 for $4.99.
Underneath the marketing โ and there is a lot of marketing โ it’s a game from Doinksoft, the studio behind Gato Roboto and Gunbrella, which is a rather better pedigree than the press release lets on.
One Hand, Four Jobs
โ The Moveset Is Actually Coherent
It’s easy to miss under the jokes, but Volvy’s big hand is a genuine traversal toolkit rather than a single gimmick. The same appendage handles hovering, grinding, burrowing and smashing โ helicoptering over chasms, riding rails, tunnelling underground and going through enemies and secret passages.
That’s four distinct movement verbs bound to one visual idea, which is a tidy piece of design. Platformers usually accumulate abilities as separate unlocks; here everything routes through the one oversized limb, so the character reads as a single coherent thing rather than a bag of powers.
๐ Hover
Helicopter across huge chasms that would otherwise end the run.
๐น Grind
Ride rails at speed, because every mascot platformer eventually gets rails.
โ๏ธ Burrow
Punch straight down and travel underground through the level.
๐ข Smash
Break through enemies, obstacles and hidden passages alike.
There’s also Swolvy. Collect enough onions โ which are the game’s stated collectible and, per Devolver, “delicious” โ and Volvy transforms into a considerably more muscular version of himself to power out of trouble.
The Bit About the Fake Franchise History
๐ญ A Remaster of the Original Remake
Devolver are running a conceit worth explaining, because it’s most of the announcement’s humour. Reslimed is presented as the latest in a long, troubled line of Volvy re-releases โ a beloved legacy franchise that has, in reality, never existed.
The pixel art has been redrawn “by the members of the original development team that are no longer incarcerated.” The between-level minigames have been redesigned so that they “no longer encourage children to smoke cigarettes.”
It’s an elaborate way of announcing a small platformer, and it works because the invented history is doing what actual remaster marketing does โ reassuring you the problems have been fixed โ about problems that were never real.
What’s genuinely on offer: four revamped worlds with new boss fights, every pixel from the original redrawn and recoloured, and redesigned minigames between levels.
Doinksoft Are the Real Story
๐ฎ Gato Roboto and Gunbrella Were Both Genuinely Good
The press release describes Doinksoft as “offensively talented,” which is a joke that happens to be true. The studio’s back catalogue includes Gato Roboto โ a compact, extremely well-received monochrome metroidvania about a cat in a mech โ and Gunbrella, a noir action-platformer built around a weapon that is exactly what its name suggests. Dark Scrolls is also theirs.
That matters here, because it’s the difference between a five-dollar novelty and a five-dollar game from people who have repeatedly made tight, characterful platformers. The counter-programming stunt gets the headlines; the studio behind it is the reason to pay attention.
