Junkfish has announced that Wilderdark, its all-new first-person survival horror adventure, will launch on Steam on November 3, 2026. The studio revealed the date at last night’s Convergence Showcase, alongside a new cinematic teaser. It marks Junkfish’s return to the stealth survival horror genre following their cult hit Monstrum.
Set on an island overtaken by a mysterious ectoparasitic organism that has infected the local dinosaurs and plant life, Wilderdark casts you as a field operative sent by a shadowy organisation on a dangerous mission — the search for immortality. Your job is to explore, document the island’s corrupted ecosystem, collect samples, and uncover what happened to the expeditions that never returned. One of them was led by your own parents.
Stealth Is Your Only Weapon
Survival in Wilderdark is about staying hidden. Rather than arming you to fight back, the game leans hard into stealth as your greatest tool — sneaking through dense jungles, abandoned research camps, and parasite-infested ruins while avoiding relentless apex predators that hunt by both sight and sound. It’s a design philosophy that runs straight through Junkfish’s DNA, and it reframes every dinosaur encounter as a threat to escape rather than a boss to defeat.
To uncover the truth of what happened on the island, you’ll need to observe carefully, document your discoveries through photography, and craft essential tools from whatever you can scavenge. The result is a survival loop built on tension and curiosity in equal measure — part nature expedition, part nightmare.
Chart an unnatural island of dense jungle, abandoned research camps, and parasite-infested ruins — cataloguing corrupted dinosaurs and plant life as you go.
No fighting your way out. Apex predators hunt by sight and sound, so staying hidden and reading your surroundings is the only way through.
Document discoveries through the lens, collect samples, and craft tools from scavenged materials to piece together what really happened here.
Trace the fate of earlier expeditions that never returned — including one led by the protagonist’s own parents — as a search for immortality turns to horror.
If any of that sounds up your alley, you don’t have to wait until November to try it. A demo is available now on Steam, and Junkfish has been actively responding to community feedback — the demo was recently updated with a map and waypoint system for easier navigation across the island, along with a batch of quality-of-life tweaks and bug fixes.
Junkfish Returns to Horror
Monstrum built a devoted following on a simple, terrifying premise: a randomised monster hunting you through a derelict ship, with permadeath raising the stakes on every run. Wilderdark trades the cargo hold for a corrupted prehistoric island and swaps the single stalker for an ecosystem of infected predators, but the core instinct — make the player feel hunted, not heroic — is unmistakably the same studio.
Wilderdark launches on PC via Steam on November 3, 2026. You can follow the game on Bluesky, Discord, Instagram, and YouTube, try the demo, and wishlist it now on Steam ahead of release.
