💼 Know this first: this isn’t a GTA clone, and you can try it for free. The Boss Gangster comes from BEF GAMES, a tiny indie team of just a few developers, and is published by Tripwire Presents. It left Early Access on October 27 after a year. It’s $18.99, or $15.19 until November 10. There’s a free 90-minute demo with no features removed, and one player says your character carries over if you buy. It’s Mostly Positive overall on Steam (600 reviews), though recent reviews are Mixed.
🏙️ Build Your Criminal Empire From the Streets Up
Steal cars, run illegal businesses, recruit your own crime family and conquer the city in a seamless open world. Start as a car thief, drug producer, nightclub owner, dealer or crime boss. Every path leads to the same goal: control the city.
Manage warehouses and nightclubs, automate production chains, and fight rival families for 11 districts. Switch between RTS strategy and third-person action as you rise from a street criminal to the ultimate crime boss.
The Godfather’s business, Chinatown Wars’ streets, and a spreadsheet full of crime.
Players who expect a GTA clone will be disappointed by The Boss Gangster: Criminal Empire, and that’s not a bad thing. Version 1.0 is a crime management sim at heart, with a third-person action layer on top. You start with $20 and nothing else, then build up businesses, a crew and a district-by-district war machine. It’s janky, it doesn’t hold your hand, and it still needs polish. But for patient players who love the idea of running a family as much as shooting for one, it’s surprisingly deep for the price.
Our verdict: “Live out your gangster fantasy in this gritty, immersive game. Juggling power, money, and loyalty keeps you on your toes. A wild ride!”
How You Build an Empire
Every crime, business and territory is connected. Here’s the shape of the climb.
👛 Petty Crime
Pickpocket, steal cars, rob targets and take side jobs, like driving a taxi, to earn your first dollars.
🏭 Businesses
Run an office for criminal jobs, a nightclub with staff stats, a drug warehouse, a market stall and protection rackets.
👥 Your Family
Hire gangsters, assign them jobs that run on their own, send burglars into neighborhoods and post dealers on corners.
🗺️ Turf War
Take businesses from rival families, defend what you’ve seized, and earn Prestige across 11 districts.
A Management Sim in a Gangster Suit
🎩 Not GTA, and Proud of It
Several players stress the same point: don’t go in expecting GTA. One called it much more of a management sim than an action game, said the third-person view was added at the community’s request, and compared it to The Godfather 2 and Gangsters: Organized Crime. Another described it as GTA: Chinatown Wars where you run your own gang, and a third said it scratches the GTA Online money-making itch without the aggressive monetization or trolls.
The depth is real. Leave crew members at your office on auto-accept and they’ll handle jobs without you. Hire and train burglars, staff a nightclub, and juggle toxic fumes in a drug warehouse. One player praised the stock and property tiers and mini-games, and another said the action breaks up the usual “invest money, get more money” loop. Players report sinking 36 and 48 hours into it, and both called it well worth the price.
Play It Your Way
⚰️ Ironman, Camera Modes and Freedom
There’s no single correct path. One player loved that you start with just $20, with several starting options for a smoother opening, and that every run can be different. Hardcore bosses can try Ironman mode: one life, and if you die, you lose everything.
You can play in RTS (top-down) or third-person view, and the latest patch remembers your preference when entering and leaving locations. The November 6 patch also reworked taxi jobs into a full side career with scammers and picky passengers, added real police chases, and lets you interrogate captured rivals for Capo locations, then recruit them, ransom them or eliminate them.
Where It Stumbles
⚠️ A Few Loose Ends in the Operation
1. Jank. Several players mention jank and the occasional annoying glitch. One felt that once a system worked, the developers moved on to the next instead of polishing it. Another felt it left Early Access a little early.
2. It doesn’t hold your hand. It takes a couple of hours to understand how everything fits together, and one player said it suits people who enjoy “working” a bit for their fun. The in-game wiki helps a lot, and the October 31 update added a searchable help system.
3. Balance. One player said some activities aren’t worthwhile compared to others, and another felt the storyline was short, even after 36 hours of play.
4. Controller and Linux quirks. One player found that some tutorials still show keyboard keys with a controller, and that on Linux the ambient audio was very quiet.
5. Recent reviews are Mixed. Steam’s overall rating is Mostly Positive, but the last 30 days of reviews sit at Mixed. The demo is the best way to see if it clicks for you.
🛠️ A Developer That Actually Listens
Several players praise BEF GAMES’ responsiveness. One said the lead developer checked their save and pushed out a hotfix soon after they reported a bug. The team has shipped at least six updates since launch day: performance fixes, smoother driving and aiming, inventory stacking, camera improvements, better UI scaling for ultrawide and 16:10 screens, and the big November 6 patch. Planned next: reworked hot dog and doorman jobs, possible car washes and chop shops, a penthouse, a Casino expansion, and several expansion packs.

The Verdict
The Boss Gangster: Criminal Empire is an ambitious crime sim from a tiny team, and its connected systems are its biggest strength. Running your office, nightclub and drug warehouse while your crew works jobs and fights rival families gives it a “one more deal” pull that few games in the genre manage. Ironman mode, multiple starting paths and two camera styles mean you really can play it your way.
It’s still rough. Systems feel functional rather than polished, the early hours are confusing, and recent Steam reviews are mixed. But BEF GAMES is patching fast and listening closely, and the free demo makes it easy to find out whether it’s for you.
The honest read: if you loved The Godfather 2 or Gangsters: Organized Crime, play the demo today. If you want GTA, keep looking.
