Ground Zero Hero is a horde-survival roguelite in the vein of Vampire Survivors, wrapped in a hand-drawn, ’90s-cartoon art style that its creators say was inspired by The Simpsons and Rick and Morty. You play as Radboy, roaming a radioactive wasteland overrun by mutated freaks. Every enemy you destroy becomes fuel for your evolution: absorb their glowing remains, stack mutations and build increasingly ridiculous power combos, while smashing piñatas for the candy you need to survive.
Absorb. Mutate. Evolve.
Absorb enemy remains to unlock new mutations, and stack them into wild, unpredictable builds.
Smash piñatas for the sweet, sweet candy that keeps you alive in the wasteland.
Collect resources and break into safes under pressure to grow stronger.
Each wave escalates and each night gets deadlier, in screen-filling bullet-hell chaos.
Runs are short, fast and built for “one more go”. Between them, you unlock permanent upgrades across multiple progression paths, discover devastating mutation combos and work through a long list of challenges. And yes, according to Acclaim’s feature list, at some point you get to give birth to a man in a chicken suit.
What Players Are Saying
Steam players have given Ground Zero Hero a Very Positive rating. Reviewers call it addictive (one called it “trippy”) and praise the colourful art style, the way the mutation system makes each run feel different, and a bunker mechanic that helps through tougher sections. One player noted that it doesn’t reinvent the genre but still recommended it. The most specific complaint so far is about some very saturated colours on the fourth map.
Acclaim’s Marc Anthony Rodriguez summed up its appeal: “Ground Zero Hero is weird, loud, radioactive, and absolutely refuses to behave. It’s the kind of game that reminds you why games are supposed to be fun in the first place.”
More Ways to Play
Beyond PC and consoles, Ground Zero Hero is also available to stream on Antstream Arcade, and to buy for Polycade‘s modular arcade cabinets. PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers can try it with a one-hour game trial, and there’s a free demo on Steam.
