4A Games and Deep Silver debuted the first gameplay trailer for Metro 2039 during the Xbox Games Showcase today, alongside confirmation of a February 2027 launch window on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. The three-minute trailer — captured entirely in-game — offers the clearest look yet at the game’s setting, the new antagonist Hunter, and the new additions to the Metro arsenal.
Metro 2039 is the next entry in 4A Games’ critically acclaimed Metro franchise, inspired by Dmitry Glukhovsky’s worldwide best-selling novel trilogy. The game takes place beneath the ruins of Moscow, following a new protagonist known as The Stranger — a figure consumed by anger at the Metro’s new ruler, a fanatical Spartan leader named Hunter who has transformed the tunnels under his regime through lies and propaganda. The Stranger will not stop until the Fuhrer burns.
Hunter — The Fuhrer of the Metro
Hunter is Metro 2039’s central antagonist — a formerly legendary high-ranking Spartan Ranger who swore to protect the Metro, now transformed into the fanatical ruler of the tunnels. The Stranger’s mission is rooted in a sense of personal betrayal: as part of the Spartan Order, Hunter represented everything the Rangers stood for. What remains of the Order lies in ruins, and where the Spartans were once selfless protectors, the Stranger believes Hunter has become the very enemy they used to fight. The trailer offers the first real look at Hunter’s visual design and the ideological conflict that drives the story.
