Total Chaos has received its Retro Mode update, out now as a free download on Steam, GOG, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Game Pass. The headline addition lets you play the entire psychological survival horror experience through a chilling new lens inspired by the game’s own origins as an award-winning DOOM II total conversion.
It’s a genuinely clever piece of fan service. Total Chaos started as a mod, grew into a standalone commercial horror game, and can now be viewed back through the aesthetic it came from — with monsters recreated using assets from the original DOOM II WAD.
Retro Mode
For anyone who followed Total Chaos from its modding days, this is the update. Games that outgrow their mod origins rarely look back, and building a mode that deliberately reverts to the source aesthetic — right down to using original WAD assets for the creatures — is a rare kind of tribute to where a project came from.
A Fifth Ending, and One Last Secret
The update also adds a brand-new fifth ending. Completing the New Game+ Epilogue uncovers it, along with one final secret hidden within Fort Oasis — giving returning players a concrete reason to go back in beyond the visual overhaul.
Navigation gets a meaningful upgrade too, with a new in-game map and location markers making it easier to find your way through the island’s decaying world. Anyone who found themselves turned around in Fort Oasis the first time through will appreciate that one.
Pixelated visuals, classic post-processing, and monsters rebuilt from original DOOM II WAD assets.
Complete the New Game+ Epilogue to uncover an all-new ending and one last secret in Fort Oasis.
New map and location markers make navigating the island’s decaying world far more manageable.
Playtime tracking, a garbage chute storage system, a reworked encounter, and general polish.
• Garbage chute item storage system
• Reworked “Forgotten” chapter encounter
• Additional polish and improvements throughout
Akira Yamaoka Returns
Yamaoka’s involvement remains one of the most remarkable things about Total Chaos. The man who defined the sound of psychological horror in games scoring a project that began as a DOOM II mod is the kind of pairing that shouldn’t happen, and “Catharsis” arriving alongside a mode that reaches back to those mod roots makes for a fitting combination.
Why Go Back?
Between Retro Mode, a fifth ending to chase, a proper map, and a new Yamaoka track, this is a substantial free update for a game that was already worth your time. Total Chaos remains a psychological survival horror experience unlike much else out there — and the fact that the update is free across every platform, Game Pass included, makes the return trip an easy call.
The Retro Mode Update is available now on Steam, GOG, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Game Pass. Return to Fort Oasis — if you dare.
