Novemtails and Assemble Entertainment have unveiled Under Canopies, a cozy first-person survival game set in a handcrafted forest where the goal is to build a peaceful life alongside nature — not to conquer it. Revealed today during the Latin American Games Showcase, the game removes combat entirely, replacing danger and urgency with crafting, exploration, farming, wildlife observation, and personal expression. It is coming to PC via Steam in 2026.
Developed by Roberto Ortiz, a solo developer based in Mexico working under the Novemtails label, Under Canopies started as a personal project and grew into something considerably more fully realised. A demo during Steam Next Fest drew over 33,000 wishlists before the full reveal — an unusually strong number for a game in this niche that suggests the cozy survival genre has more hunger for a combat-free, nature-first experience than the market has been willing to supply.
What to Expect
The clearest reference points are Spiritfarer, Among Trees, and A Short Hike — games built around the emotional texture of being somewhere beautiful and unhurried rather than the mechanical pressure of survival threat. Under Canopies occupies a similar register but takes the no-danger premise further than most: there is no hunting, no combat, and no hostile wildlife. The forest is a place to settle into, document, and gradually make your own.
