🎧 Know this first: you don’t need to have played the first two games, but it helps. Red Nun’s Legacy is the final chapter of the Remothered trilogy, and it’s built so newcomers can start here, with plenty of references for longtime fans. It’s a stealth-heavy, hide-and-seek horror game with very little combat. It’s Steam Deck Verified, and a tougher Nightmare Mode is on the way. Play it in the dark, with headphones.
🩸 Your Daughter Has Been Kidnapped
More than a year after several young girls vanished in Sicily, a mysterious recording rekindles Susan Harper’s hope that her daughter, Agata, might still be alive. Against all reason, she travels to Villa Ashmann, a decaying noble residence isolated on the slopes of Mount Etna.
What starts as a desperate search soon becomes a journey into terror, through a labyrinth of relentless stalkers, hidden symbols and hypnotic phenomena, and into the forgotten story of the Cristo Morente, the Sicilian convent where the myth of the Red Nun began.
Hide. Remember. Survive the Red Nun.
It’s been a long wait. Stormind Games’ giallo-inspired survival horror series began with Remothered: Tormented Fathers and continued with Broken Porcelain, and the studio has since sharpened its skills on projects like A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead. Red Nun’s Legacy closes the Red Nun’s story with a soundtrack by Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka and Aram Shahbazians, BAFTA winner Cissy Jones as Susan, and The Game Awards winner Maggie Robertson as the Red Nun. Critics have been kind, too: 9/10 from Rely on Horror, 8.5/10 from HorrorFuel and 8/10 from Analog Stick Gaming.
Our verdict: “This nightmarish finale delivers genuine survival horror thrills with inventive mechanics like mirror abilities and moth manipulation that set it apart from genre conventions.”
Master Hypnosis Powers
What sets Red Nun’s Legacy apart from other stalker horror games is its set of hypnosis powers. They don’t make you a fighter. Instead, they help you uncover the truth and turn the environment to your advantage.
🕰️ Retrocognition
Read forgotten memories from objects, triggering flashbacks players describe as genuinely creepy, slasher-movie style.
🪞 Mirror Abilities
Use mirrors to reveal hidden paths through the villa.
🦋 Moth Manipulation
Control moths to twist the environment, and the hunt, in your favor.
🔍 Clues & Puzzles
Search every room for key items and clues. Puzzles are fun without demanding too much brain power.
Hide and Seek With the Red Nun
👣 Survive Horrific Stalkers
At its core, this is stealth survival horror: hide, evade and only fight back in critical moments, knowing that every mistake can be fatal. The stalkers’ AI is a clear step up from earlier games, and one longtime fan says the chase sequences are a big improvement. Movement feels better and faster too.
The level design gives you options. There are plenty of hiding spots, but save points are spaced out, which creates a good balance of tension. One experienced player enjoyed learning each stalker’s patrol routes and weak spots, and noticed that tricks that work on minor stalkers are harder to pull off against the main ones. One player was reminded of old-school Resident Evil and Alone in the Dark, and the whole thing is a clear love letter to giallo cinema, complete with an intriguing “old film” visual filter.
🏚️ An Italian Nightmare
The atmosphere is the star. The set dressing captures a genuinely Italian feel, the sound design is intense, and players describe feeling trapped inside the villa. As one put it, even when they got lost, they never got bored, because the atmosphere never let up. The story is very dark, and one player said the ending left them completely speechless.
Longtime fans will enjoy the return of some familiar faces and the way it ties up questions from the first two games. A couple of them call it the best game in the trilogy.
Where It Stumbles
⚠️ A Few Cracks in the Villa
1. It’s on the easy side. Veterans of stalker horror may find the enemies quite easy to evade, and a couple of players asked for a harder mode. The good news: Nightmare Mode is coming (see below).
2. Cutscenes over-explain. The series has always struggled with “show, don’t tell.” This one is much better, and you can piece most of the story together by exploring and reading files, but one player still felt the cutscenes spell out exactly what characters are thinking.
3. AA visuals. Opinions vary. Some players think it looks good, while one felt the graphics fall short by modern standards, even for a double-A game. Another found the running animation a bit like sliding on ice.
4. Mixed feelings on the music. Several players praise the audio, but one found the soundtrack lackluster.
5. Missing options. One player has asked for a borderless fullscreen option.
🌙 HDR and Nightmare Mode Are Coming
Stormind has announced an upcoming update that will add HDR support and Nightmare Mode, an optional, “unforgiving” difficulty where stalkers apply more sustained pressure and leave less room for mistakes. No date yet, but it directly answers players’ biggest request.
Platforms & Performance
It’s Steam Deck Verified, with full controller support (Xbox, DualShock over USB and DualSense) and 13 languages. Players on high-end PCs report smooth performance with everything maxed, including ray tracing. It is demanding, though, with a minimum spec of Windows 11, 16 GB of RAM and an RTX 2070 Super or RX 5700 XT, plus 50 GB of storage.

The Verdict
Remothered: Red Nun’s Legacy is the game the series has been building toward. Its hypnosis powers give it a real identity in a crowded genre, Villa Ashmann is a gorgeous, oppressive place to be hunted through, and the dark, giallo-soaked story brings the Red Nun’s tale to a satisfying close. Some longtime fans are already calling it the best entry in the trilogy, and it’s easy to see why.
It’s not flawless. Experienced players will find the stalkers on the easy side, the cutscenes still over-explain, and the visuals and animation sometimes show its double-A budget. But Nightmare Mode is already on the way, and none of those issues take away from just how effectively it gets under your skin.
The honest read: if you love stalker horror, giallo films or classic survival horror, Red Nun’s Legacy is well worth $29.99, whether you’ve played the earlier games or not. Turn off the lights and put on your headphones.
