Behaviour Interactive and Devolver Digital debuted a fresh gameplay trailer for Serious Sam: Shatterverse at the PC Gaming Show, and opened Steam playtest sign-ups alongside it. The game — a five-player co-op FPS roguelite built from the bones of the Serious Sam franchise — is launching later this year on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and you can get in early right now.
The premise is exactly the right kind of unhinged for a Serious Sam spinoff: Mental’s machinations have fractured the walls between universes, creating the Shatterverse. Sams from multiple dimensions must now team up — working alongside alternate versions of themselves — to repair the damage, finish battles other Sams couldn’t complete, and track down Mental’s five nefarious lieutenants across shifting multidimensional stages. It is also the 25th anniversary of Serious Sam: The First Encounter this year, which makes this the franchise’s most significant moment in a long time.
Five Sams Against the Shatterverse
Shatterverse translates the boomer shooter chaos of the classic Serious Sam games into a co-op roguelite structure built for five players. You and up to four others blast through shifting universes, stacking boons between runs, and bending the rules of each session with run modifiers that keep the experience meaningfully different across playthroughs. The roguelite layer doesn’t replace the run-and-gun core — it sits on top of it, adding build depth and replayability to the wave-after-wave alien carnage that defines the franchise.
Behaviour Interactive is an interesting choice of developer for this project — the studio behind Dead by Daylight has deep experience designing multiplayer experiences around teamwork, role differentiation, and sessions that play out differently based on player composition. That expertise in co-op multiplayer loop design translates well to what Shatterverse is attempting.
